PMSE-2011 inaugurated at MIT

Manipal, March 25: The three-day workshop on “Predictive Mathematical Models in Science an Engineering”- PMSE 2011, was inaugurated by the vice chancellor of Manipal University Dr K Ramnarayan at the AC Seminar Hall of MIT here on Firday. The workshop is being organized by the Department of Mathematics, Manipal Institute of Technology.

The workshop is unique in nature. The chief guest, Dr V Sree Hari Rao, Professor, Department of Mathematics, JNT University, Hyderabad said that the application of mathematics to biology and medicine has a long history, but recently there has been an explosion of interest in this field.

He said the subject of predictive mathematical modeling in medicine is highly interdisciplinary involving biologists, medical doctors and mathematicians with skills to handle databases effectively.

The convener of the workshop and HoD, Dr Sesappa A Rai spoke about the workshop. He said the problems of modern society are both complex and interdisciplinary. Techniques developed for classical problems in physical sciences have ben found extremely useful in the study of biological, behaviour and life sciences. This needs inter dependence among the scientists of various disciplines and it promotes research.

Director of MIT, Dr Kumkum Garg in her presidential remarks motivated the participants for research and requested use of mathematical models for analysis of technical subjects. Dr P.G. Bhat gave a brief about the workshop.

Bengaluru, Apr 14: Karnataka Labour Department has issued an order instructing public and private establishments not to cut salaries or lay off employees during the lockdown imposed to counter Coronavirus.

In view of Covid-19, there may be incidents where services of employees or workers may be dispensed with on the pretext of the disease or employees may be forced to go on leave without pay, the Ministry of Labour and Employment said.

Legal action will be initiated if any establishment violates this advisory, Labour Department Secretary P Manivannan said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.

Mangaluru, Jan 4 The International Kite Festival, will be the main attraction of the Karavali Utsav being held here from January 10-19.

Deputy Commissioner Sindhu Roopesh said on Saturday that a variety of cultural programmes are scheduled on the occasion of Karavali Utsav being organized by the DK District Administration at the Karavali Utsav grounds, Kadri Park and Panambur Beach.

Cultural programmes will be presented by budding local artistes of State, National and International fame. All facilities for the cultural programmes will be set up at the Kadri park and Karavali Utsav grounds.

The programme will begin with a cultural procession from Nehru Maidan on 10 January followed by the Inauguration at the Karavali Utsav grounds.

Tumkuru, Feb 26: A man was arrested from Azad Nagar area of Anantpur on Wednesday for making derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammed and posting it on social media earlier this month, police said.

He was identified as Atul Kumar alias Madhugiri Modi, a resident of Madhugiri’s Hobali Honnapur village.

According to Superintendent of Police Vamshikrishna teams had been formed to arrest the accused following protests against his video and remarks against Prophet Mohammed in Tumkuru and Madhugiri,
