Acharya team visits UPCL, interacts with local people

Udupi, March 30: An official team led by Udupi district in-charge Minister VS Acharya visited the coal-based thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) and its ash pond at Yellur-Santhur in Udupi district on Tuesday.

Besides Dr. Acharya, the team comprised of Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat and Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendon.

Deputy Commissioner P Hemalatha told media persons here that the team members met the local people, who voiced their grievances related to the thermal plant.

Hemalatha said it was decided that a team of experts comprising of officials from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and professors from the Manipal Institute of Technology and the National Institute of Technology – Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, would be formed. This team would visit the affected areas in 15 days.

Meanwhile, president of the district unit of the BJP K Udaykumar Shetty said that UPCL had been warned to solve the problems related to its plant near Nandikur within a month.

He said MP D V Sadananda Gowda held talks with vice-president (Corporate Affairs) of UPCL K. Kishore Alva on the matter. It had been made clear to UPCL that it would not be allowed to function if people continued to face problems.

Covid-19: Karnataka to come out with ordinance to give special power to officer

Bengaluru, Apr 20: Close on the heels of the Padarayanapura vandalism, Karnataka Cabinet on Monday decided to promulgate an ordinance that gives special powers to implementing authority and also provide protection to frontline health workers.

Briefing media after the Cabinet meeting here, Minister for Law J C Madhuswamy said that the ordinance will be on the lines of one promulgated by Kerala and Uttar Pradesh governments.

“Through the ordinance, a State Epidemic Act will be enacted to protect health workers and any non-cooperation will be punishable. Also, any attempt to deliberately spread the disease or float rumours will attract action,” he added.

Pakistani roommate striving for release of Udupi man arrested in Saudi over offensive Facebook post

Dammam, Feb 3: Harish Bangera, 32, who was arrested in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia more than a month ago after offensive Facebook post went viral, has remained incommunicado.

Bangera, who hails from Goyadibettu in Bijadi village of Kundapur taluk, Udupi district, was an air-conditioning technician for a company in Dammam, capital of Saudi's eastern province.

He was arrested on December 20, 2019 after he posted derogatory messages on Facebook against crown prince Mohammad bin Salman and went on to claim that a Ram temple will be built in the holy city of Makkah too just like in Ayodhya where the Babri mosque was demolished.

Fearing legal action, he later posted a video pleading for forgiveness. “I have committed a mistake. Please forgive me. I will never upload any such posts again," he is seen saying in the video.

After his arrest, his roommate, who happens to be a Pakistani, has reportedly made several attempt to contact him, but in vain. He also has approached many Indian and Saudi authorities in his bid to get Bangera out of prison, sources said.

The Saudi authorities have not even responded to the messages of Indian Ministry of External Affairs. "We've made many efforts to contact the Saudi authorities but they haven't responded,” MEA sources said.

'If you come to road, I'll come to your home': Traffic Police

Bengaluru, Apr 2: In a bid to discourage people from coming out on roads during the lockdown, Bengaluru Traffic Police have inscribed a message that reads, "If you come to road, I'll come to your home."

It was written on the road at Nagenahalli check-post. The message was written by the cops in the regional language.

Meanwhile, nine fresh cases were reported in Karnataka with the count rising to 110 in the state on Wednesday.

Out of the total cases, three persons died due to the virus while nine others have been discharged after recovery.

"COVID-19 cases climb to 110 in Karnataka, with nine fresh cases being reported between 5 pm yesterday and 2 pm today. Out of the total cases, three have died while nine others have been discharged," a bulletin issued by the state health department said.

"Out of 110 cases detected and confirmed in Karnataka so far, seven cases are transit
passengers of Kerala who have landed in our airports and being treated in
Karnataka," it added.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday said that there are 1,834 coronavirus positive cases in India, including 1,649 active cases, 144 cured/discharged/migrated people and 41 deaths.
