IYC to hold elections for membership

Mangalore, March 30: The Indian Youth Congress (IYC), the youth wing of Indian National Congress will hold its membership drive through organizational elections in the State from April 25.



Addressing media persons here on Wednesday, Abu Sharma, Lok Sabha Returning Officer of the Indian National Congress said that this was the first time that internal party elections are being held in the Indian National Congress.



He said after completing membership drive, a voters list will be created and elections process for the IYC organization office bearers at booth level will be commenced. This will be followed by elections for office bearers at Assembly Constituency level, the Lok Sabha and the state level.



To ensure fairness in the election process, he said, Rahul Gandhi has requested Foundation for Advanced Management of Elections (FAME), an NGO created by Lyngdoh, former Chief Election Commissioner of India, to audit the membership and election process ensuring it is impartial and open to all.



He said “It is only through these elections that the real leaders will get identified. Leaders who have not risen through a transparent and democratic process cannot be expected to represent the real aspirations and needs of the largest and youngest democracy of the world,”




To become a member of the Indian Youth Congress, one should download membership form from www.iyc.in/karnataka and filled applications should be sent to Lok Sabha Returning Officer with a copy of address proof, ID proof along with membership fee.

Mangaluru Jul 11: A member of Adyar gram panchayat, who was attacked by a gang last night breathed his last at a private hospital in the city.

Mohammed Yaqoob, who was a BJP backed member of Adyar GP was attacked near his village by a gang at around 9 pm on Friday.

In spite of sustaining serious injuries, he managed to return home. 

He then hired an auto-rickshaw and went to Highland Hospital along with his son. 

However, he breathed his last there without responding to any treatment.

According to sources, the victim knew one of the assistants.

It is suspected that political or personal rivalry might be the reason for the attack. However the exact motto behind the attack is not yet known. 

A case has been registered in Kankanady Rural police station.

Bengaluru, Feb 23: The sleuths of Custom Department have seized ephedrine worth Rs 5 Crore in courier terminal of Air Cargo complex in Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), the department said on Sunday.

Customs Joint Commissioner M J Chethan, in a statement, said that Central Intelligence Unit, Air Cargo Complex, scanned the package while verifying export consignments and found concealment of some powder. 5.04 kg of Ephedrine worth Rs 5 crore was packed in polythene pouches and concealed between cardboard layers of wedding invitation cards.

Detailed examination of the Wedding cards revealed banned drugs hidden between 43 wedding invitation cards in the package that also contained a few clothes.

Mangaluru, Jan 18: The Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has claimed that around 3 lakh people had gathered at Shah Gardan, Adyar-Kannur in Mangaluru on January 15, even though their expectation was just 1 lakh people.

The protest against CAA, NPR, NRC and police atrocities against minorities was jointly being organised by the various Muslim organisations of twin district under the leadership of Muslim Central Committee.

“We had just expected around 1 lakh people. But the Mangaluru witnessed the largest gathering in its history on Jan 15. Around 3 lakh people had participated in the protest,” Ibrahim Kodichail, vice president of the committee told media persons today.

K S Mohammed Masood, president of the committee, added that the event was a grand success and fretful, besides being peaceful. He wholeheartedly thanked all those who strived hard to make the protest a great success and to those who had taken part in it.

“At least 28 organisations have come together. As a result 3 lakh people assembled. I thank all those organisations,” he said.

He also opined that police too had helped to maintain law and order and cooperated with the protesters at the venue.

SM Rasheed Haji, B M Mumtaz Ali, Syed Ahmed Basha Thangal, Kasim Ahmed H K and Mansoor Ahmed Azad were present at the press meet among others.
