DSS demands action against college principal

Udupi, April 2: District organising secretary of the Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) Ramesh Kotian on Friday said that the State Government should suspend the principal of the Udupi Government Girls' Pre-University College, Suresh Thunga, for taking additional fees from poor students.

Mr. Kotian told presspersons here that an inquiry conducted by the Deputy Director (Administration) of the Pre-University Education Department, R. Mahadevappa, revealed that Mr. Thunga had been accepting “additional fee” of Rs. 1,000 from arts and commerce students and Rs. 1,200 from science students.

Mr. Thunga had stated that the “additional fee” was taken with the permission of the college development committee. The money collected was used to give honorariums to lecturers as the college faced staff shortage. It was also used for payment of telephone and electricity bills.

Mr. Kotian said that the inquiry report of Mr. Mahadevappa made it clear that only receipt books for acceptance of this “additional fee” from students for 2010-11 were available.

The report stated that Mr. Thunga's statement that receipt books detailing acceptance of “additional fee” in previous academic years were stolen led to suspicion.

The report suggested that the auditors of Directorate of Pre-University Education could conduct a detailed investigation of the “additional fee” received after Mr. Thunga took charge as the principal of the college.

16 children among Udupi's 27 new covid-19 cases

Udupi, May 21: In a shocking development, as many as 27 fresh coronavirus positive cases were reported in the coastal district of Udupi today.

Another shocker is, 16 among 27 covid-19 patients are children. The rest are six men and five women.

Interestingly, all of them have inter-state travel history. 23 had come from Maharashtra and 3 from Telangana. Another one had come from Kerala to Manipal. More details are awaited.

Udupi: Silver ornaments worth Rs 10 lakhs stolen from temple

Udupi, Feb 27: Silver ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh were stolen from the Badakere Laxmi Janardhana temple under Byndoor police station limits in Udupi district.

The theft which reportedly took place on Wednesday late night, came to light today morning.

Notably, this is the fourth incident reported during the last two months.

According to this BJP leader, eating flattened rice could mean you are Bangladeshi

Indore, Jan 24: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kailash Vijayvargiya on Thursday said that he suspected that there were some Bangladeshis among construction labourers who worked at his house recently.

Their “strange” eating habits aroused suspicion about their nationality, the BJP general secretary said at a seminar in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) here.

When a new room was being added at his house recently, he found “eating habits” of some of the workers “strange” as “they were eating only `poha’ (flattened rice)”, he said.

After talking to their supervisor and the building contractor, he suspected that these workers were from Bangladesh, the BJP leader said.

When reporters questioned him later, Vijayvargiya said, “I suspected these workers were residents of Bangladesh. Two days after I became suspicious, they stopped working at my house. I have not filed any police complaint yet. I only mentioned this incident to warn people,” he said.

Speaking at the seminar, Vijayvargiya also claimed that a Bangladeshi terrorist was keeping a watch on him for the last one and a half years.

“Whenever I go out, six armed security personnel follow me. What is happening in this country? Will outside people enter and spread so much terror?” he asked.

“Don’t get confused by rumours. The CAA is in the interest of the country. This law will provide asylum to genuine refugees and identify intruders who are a threat to the country’s internal security,” he added.
