Complaints filed by Dalits are settled by police with a compromise'

Mangalore, April 3: Representatives of Dalits have urged the district police to take appropriate measures to effectively implement the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act-1989 in Dakshina Kannada, as in many instances the cases filed by Dalits end up with a “compromise”.



The voice against finalising the cases filed by Dalits, especially Dalit women was raised during the monthly grievance meeting of SC/ST as usually held at the office of Superintendent of Police here on Sunday. However, the new SP of DK Labu Ram, who was supposed to hear the grievances of the people of marginalised section, was not present in the meeting, due to unavoidable reasons.



T Sarvothama Pai, Superintendent of Police, Citizen Rights Implementation Directorate and BJ Bhandari, DySP of Mangalore DCRB responded to the questions and problems raised by the participants of meeting.



P Keshava, a Dalit leader said that even though police register a case in crimes against Dalits, later, they settle them with compromises. “There are dozens of such instances in the district. In many instances where Dalit women were cheated by men after developing sexual contact under the pretext of love, the police have played the role of brokers to make compromise between two parties, apparently to help the accused,” he said, questioning if it is just to finish a criminal case with a compromise? Criminals should be punished, especially in atrocity cases, he argued.



Bhandari said that police abide by the law in all cases and according to law, atrocity cases should be handled by the police officer of the rank of DySP or above. “Normally, the inquiry of atrocity cases go on the supervision of SP and hence, there are less chances of accused using their influence to bring an end to the case under the pretext of compromise,” he said adding that “If those who had lodged complaint, choose to withdraw it, you cannot blame the police”.

Bengaluru, Aug 3: All those who met Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who has tested positive for Covid-19, in the last three-four days will have to be quarantined, Medical Education Minister Sudhakar K said on Monday.

He also said those who came in contact with Yediyurappa in a couple of programmes in the past week are being traced.

Sudhakar, a medical doctor himself, said Yediyurappa has "very mild cough and his chest is clear."

"I think eight to ten days," he told news agency when asked how long the Chief Minister would have to remain in hospital.

Sudhakar said he is also getting himself tested as a few of his office staff had tested positive.

"All those who met the Chief Minister in the last 3-4 days...ideally they should be quarantined till they receive their results/report. Those who came in contact with him in a couple of programmes will have to isolate themselves and subject themselves for testing," the Minister said.

On the Chief Minister meeting Governor Vajubhai Vala, along with Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai last Friday, Sudhakar said as a result "They also become primary contacts. Ideally, they should also be quarantined and tested."

Yediyurappa who was hospitalised on Sunday night after testing positive for Covid-19 was "doing well" and is "clinically stable", the hospital treating him said.

The 77-year old leader is being monitored by a team of doctors at the Manipal hospital here.

"He is doing well, is clinically stable and will be monitored closely by our team," the hospital said in a statement late last night.

"I have tested positive for coronavirus. Whilst I am fine, I am being hospitalised as a precaution on the recommendation of doctors. I request those who have come in contact with me recently to be observant and exercise self-quarantine," Yediyurappa had said in his tweet.

Yediyurappa was in home quarantine a couple of weeks ago, after some staff members in his home office were found infected with the virus. Subsequently, he tested negative for Covid-19.

Bengaluru, May 2: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar has urged Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to help the farmers in sending their produce to a market here amid the coronavirus lockdown.

The Congress leader made the appeal to the Chief Minister after listening to the farmers' issues while visiting KR Puram market on Friday.

Farmers told Shivakumar that the police are stopping their vehicles going towards the market despite the order passed by the Centre permitting the movement of vehicles carrying essential commodities during the lockdown.

"I have received calls from more than 100 farmers in the past few days. Every day, farmers from Kolar, Chikballapur, Malur and many other places come to KR Puram market to sell their agricultural goods, but their vehicles are stopped by the police. The cops do not allow them to sell fruits and vegetables. I request the Chief Minister to look into the matter and help the farmers," Shivakumar told reporters.

"I got to know that more than 50 vehicles were sent back. This government is of no use if they cannot secure the interests of the farmers. This government is not providing required support to the farmers," he added.

The Congress leader was accompanied by MLC Narayana Swamy and former president of Hoskote Authority Narayana Gowda during the visit to KR Puram market.

Bengaluru, May 10: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar said that Congress will make travel arrangements for stranded Keralites in the state in order to facilitate them to reach their homes.

"On the request made by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee has appointed MLA NA Haris as in-charge coordinator to look after the Kerala citizens stranded in Karnataka," DK Shivakumar, President of Karnataka Congress said in a letter addressed to Kerala Congress.

"MLA Haris will guide and assist the Kerala citizens and make the travel arrangements for those who have obtained travel passes from concerned districts after discussing with government officials to send them to their respective places with government's approval," he added.

Shivakumar shared the contact details of MLA NA Haris and a helpline number for people to register their details.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on May 1, issued an order to extend the ongoing lockdown by two more weeks from May 4 and also allowed the movement of migrant workers, tourists, students and other persons stranded at different places, by special trains, to their homes.
