Rs 300cr earmarked for developing over 300 SC/ST colonies'

Udupi, April 3: Udupi District-in-charge Minister Dr VS Acharya on Sunday distributed keys of auto rickshaws to 34 beneficiaries of Koraga community chosen under the Integrated Tribal Development Programme, at a function held at Ambedkar Bhavan.

Under the programme, government finances Rs 80,000 for the purchase of auto rickshaws costing Rs 1.30 lakhs each, towards their economical empowerment through self employment. For the beneficiaries within the city jurisdiction Udupi CMC sponsored a seed money of Rs 20,000 each and for the beneficiaries outside the city limits, Syndicate Bank sponsored the seed money of Rs 20,000 each as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility. For the remaining Rs 30,000 they bought a loan from Syndicate Bank.

On the occasion 9 students of Koraga community were given cheques of Rs 10,000 each towards meeting the expenses of their higher education, eight beneficiaries were given cheques for meeting the electrification coast of their houses and 6 Koraga families got the first installment of funds for building the houses.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Acharya said that government has reserved Rs 300 crores for developing over 300 scheduled caste-scheduled tribe colonies as model hamlets. Each hamlet would be developed by spending Rs 50 lakhs to Rs 1.5 crores. Out of that Rs 50 crore would be utilized for the development of Koraga hamlets in DK and Udupi districts.

In his presidential address Udupi MLA K Raghupathi Bhat demanded the government to reserve certain jobs for the educated youth from the primitive tribal communities like Koraga or Jenu Kuruba.

Udupi district ITDP Officer Urmila said that the programme was aimed at confidence building, economic empowerment and providing social responsibility. She said that as per the action plan prepared by the Zilla Panchayath, during the coming academic year beneficiaries would get a grant for buying taxis.

Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon, Udupi CMC President Kiran Kumar, Deputy Commissioner incharge Prabhakar, Manager of Syndicate Bank Regional Office Hemanth Bhide, councilor Suresh Shetty and others were present.

Udupi, Jan 14: The Udupi district police on Tuesday arrested two suspected terrorists at the Indrali railway station in Udupi.

The two, who had reportedly arrived from Kerala at around 6 ap.m., were standing at the Indrali railway station platform.

Suspicious of their behaviour, the police took them to custody and subjected them to interrogation.

According to reports the duo had involved in the murder of Tamil Nadu police Special Sub-Inspector Wilson.

However, top cop of the district has refused to comment regarding the arrest of the youths.

Mangaluru, Apr 3: The Dakshina Kannada district administration’s decision to ban use of private vehicles, excluding permitted categories, from Friday for effective implementation of lockdown, began showing results since morning itself.

Mangaluru City Traffic Police and Dakshina Kannada district police erected several pickets at vantage places on arterial roads to check those moving without a valid reason. Several two-wheelers were seized during the checking while a few car drivers were let off with a strict warning.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), M Manjunatha Shetty, who was supervising a picket at Hampankatta, said that movement of private vehicles has drastically reduced in the city.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Karnataka on Tuesday reported its biggest single-day spike of 6,259 Covid-19 cases and 110 fresh deaths, taking the total infection count to 1,45,830 and the toll to 2,704, the health department said.

The day also saw a record 6,777 patients getting discharged after recovery, outnumbering the fresh cases. Out of 6,259 fresh cases, a total of 2,035 cases were from Bengaluru Urban district. The previous biggest single-day record was on July 30 when the state added 6,128 cases.

A bulletin from the department said cumulatively 1,45,830 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state and it included 2,704 deaths and 69,272 discharges. Out of the 73,846 active cases, as many as 73,212 patients were stable in isolation at designated hospitals while 634 in the intensive care units.

Among the fresh deaths, Bengaluru Urban accounted for 30 followed by Dakshina Kannada (13) and Mysuru (9).

Most of the people who succumbed either had a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) or Influenza-like illness (ILI), the bulletin said. Besides Bengaluru Urban, the other districts which reported higher fresh cases on Tuesday are Mysuru 662, Kalaburagi 285, Ballari 284, Belagavi 263, Dakshina Kannada 225, Davangere 191, Dharwad and Hassan 188. Bengaluru Urban district continued to top the list of positive cases with a total of 63,033 infections, followed by Ballari 7,638 and Dakshina Kannada 6,388.

Among discharges too Bengaluru Urban tops the districts with 27,877 discharges, followed by Ballari 3,724 and Kalaburagi 3,470. A total of 14,89,016 samples had been tested so far, out of which 42,458 on Tuesday with 29,488 being rapid antigen tests.
