BJP questions CPI(M)'s move to join hands with Jamaat-e-Islami

Kasaragod, April 5: The Bharatiya Janata Party, which considers Jamaat-e-Islami as a fundamentalist and extremist group, has questioned the reported move by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to forge an electoral understanding with it.

“The CPI (M) state leadership owes an explanation to the party as to why it opted to change its stance towards the Jamaat-e-Islami, which it had till recently labelled as a group promoting fundamentalist and extremist forces and should clarify the kind of offer it had made to the Muslim outfit ahead of the Assembly polls,” PS Sreedharan Pillai, a BJP leader told a press conference here.

The CPI (M) should also clarify whether it had assessed the political ramifications the Left party would have to face by forging an electoral tie-up with the Muslim outfit, as Jamaat-e-Islami state political secretary Hameed Vanimel had opted to quit the outfit in protest against the state leadership's move, he said.

Vanimel's stance

The CPI (M)'s overtures had been exposed after Vanimel disclosed the details of a meeting CPI (M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan had with Jamaat-e-Islami State Amir T Arif Ali in Alappuzha on March 20.

He also had alleged that the talks with the ruling party leaders were held without arriving at a consensus within the organisation.

Vanimel said that the Kerala unit of the Jamaat-e-Islami decided to back the LDF without analysing the five years of LDF rule and despite the hypocritical policies of the LDF to destroy the JIH through power and influence. The CPI (M) has always accused that JIH was a terrorist organisation and wanted to destroy JIH. Hence, giving votes to them is not a rational decision, he reportedly added.

Vanimel said that he was resigning from his posts as the state secretariat member, shura member and even the primary membership.

JIH's clarification

Meanwhile, JIH Kerala Amir T Arifali reportedly told the media that the organisation had not taken any decision yet on its stand in the elections. The Jamaat had held talks with CPI (M) general secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. And a majority of the shura members support the view that the LDF should be backed in the election. However, a final decision would be taken only after the opinion of the members, he reportedly said. He added that the organisation had not got any letter of resignation from Hameed Vanimel.

The Jamat-e-Islami earlier used to support individual candidates from both the LDF and the UDF based on values. It gave support to the LDF in all constituencies in the last Assembly elections. In the last Parliament elections also, the organisation supported the LDF in all but two constituencies. However, in the panchayat elections held last year, the organisation entered the field of electoral politics through its local alliances known as Janakeeya Munnani in different places.

Bengaluru, Feb 9: The Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Services Department has kept 138 persons across the state under observation in the wake of novel coronavirus (nCov) scare, a health official said on Saturday.

"We are observing 138 people across the state, including in Bengaluru," the department's Communicable Diseases Wing Joint Director Prakash Kumar told news agency.

Though no coronavirus-positive case has been reported from Karnataka so far, four persons have been admitted in a state hospital under medical observation, Kumar confirmed.

Of the 104 samples sent for testing from the state, 85 have, so far, been declared negative. As many as 130 persons in the state were kept under home-isolation observation.

Four Karnataka districts bordering Kerala — Kodagu, Mangluru, Chamarajanagar and Mysuru — continue to be under surveillance after three positive coronavirus cases were reported in Kerala.

On Saturday, it was reported that three persons from Udupi were isolated at the Ajjarkad Government Hospital. Two of them had travelled to China while the other had returned to Udupi from Japan.

From January 20 till Saturday, 14,153 passengers underwent thermal screening at the Kempegowda International Airport, including three who had a history of visiting China’s Wuhan, the epicenter of the nCoV outbreak.

The '104 Arogya Sahayavani' call centre, which people can call for guidance on coronavirus, has clocked 1,792 calls so far.

"In case people with recent travel history to China and other affected countries develop any symptoms, they are requested to call 104 or health authorities and provide all necessary details in order to take necessary measures and are requested to be quarantined at home," reiterated the department.

Three confirmed cases of coronavirus were earlier reported in Kerala and over 722 deaths were confirmed around the world, mostly in mainland China.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Monday said he would not get involved in any 'wicked act' of bringing down the B S Yediyurappa-led government in Karnataka, amid claims that 15 to 20 BJP MLAs were ready to come out.

Clarifying that he would not disturb the government, the former Chief Minister said for him, the development of the state was important. "With great difficulty, you (Yediyurappa) have become Chief Minister for the fourth time, (I am) happy, I have nowhere said that I will disturb your government. Even now some people come and ask why I'm sitting silent when 15-20 people are ready to come out of BJP and why don't I make an attempt (to poach them), Kumaraswamy said. Speaking to reporters in Hassan, he sought to know why he should get entangled in that 'sludge' and he was not in a hurry.

"I will not get involved in a wicked act of removing a responsible government like Yediyurappa did. For me the development of the state is important," he said.

Though Kumaraswamy had raised questions about the longevity of the BJP government ahead of the December 5 bypolls, he had even then given clear indications that he would not attempt to pull down the administration as it would affect the development of the state.

The ruling BJP had swept the by-elections by winning 12 of the total 15 seats, helping the Yediyurappa government retain the majority in the Assembly.

With BJP winning 12 of the 15 assembly constituencies, it's numbers went up from 105 (including an independent) to 117, which is well ahead of the halfway mark of 111 in a 223-member Assembly (two seats-- Maski and R R Nagar-- are vacant due to pending litigation in the High Court).

The BJP came to power after the Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JD(S) coalition government collapsed as 17 MLAs had rebelled against the alliance leadership and resigned as legislators, to later favour the saffron party.
