A meritorious gesture: police children get scholarship worth lakhs

Mangalore, June 16: The hard work of children of police personnel serving under the limits of Dakshina Kannada rural district and Mangalore City Commissionerate was paid off when they got scholarship on Thursday at the auditorium of City Police Commissionerate here, courtesy entrepreneur and philanthropist Ronald Colaco.

As many as 11 PUC and 26 SSLC academically bright children took home scholarships ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 50, 000 to pursue their future education.

Speaking on the occasion, Ronald Colaco said that it was his way of service for the policemen who are overburdened with the responsibility of maintaining law and order in the society round the clock.

He said that there was a need to pay attention to the problem of police personnel. “This is one of the ways to recognise the tireless efforts, the police put in to serve the people at large,” he opined.

He said hitherto, it was Bangalore city police that benefited from his philanthropic streak, which started with remodelling the Fraser Town Police station.

Calling upon the corporate entity to come forward to extend their support to the policemen, he said the infrastructure upgradation in police stations pave the way to the drastic changes in behaviour of the police.

More than 500 schoolbags along with the stationery materials were distributed among the students.

Alok Mohan, IGP (Western Range), Labhu Ram, Superintendent of Police, DK rural district, Prabhakar, Additional SP, M Muthuraya, DCP (Law & Order) were present.

Seemanth Kumar Singh, City Police Commissioner welcomed the gathering.

Bengaluru, May 5: The Karnataka government is planning to maintain a Health database of its citizens in the backdrop of experience gained from the COVID-19 pandemic, Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said on Tuesday.

In a statement issued here, he said a “Health Register” will be maintained to keep track of all health issues of the people and the project will be implemented first in Chikkaballapur district on an experimental basis.

“COVID-19 has provided enough experience for all of us and therefore, there is a need to maintain health data of each person. The government will be undertaking a survey using a team of Primary Health Centre officials, Revenue officials, Education department staff and Asha Workers,” the Minister said in a release here.

Mangaluru, Jan 22: Mangaluru Commissioner of Police PS Harsha said that Aditya Rao, who surrendered before Bengaluru Police after planting an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Mangaluru International Airport, is now in their custody.

"Our Investigation team arrested Aditya Rao in Bengaluru in connection with planting of an explosive device at Mangaluru Airport on January 20. We produced the accused before Bengaluru first JMFC court and court issued transit warrant," said Harsha.

"We have brought him to Mangaluru from Bengaluru, now the accused is in our custody, our investigation team will interrogate him. We will investigate all aspects. He will be produced before Mangaluru 6th JMFC Court," he added.

Rao hails from Udupi and has engineering and MBA degrees.

According to the police, the IED was recovered from a bag at Mangaluru airport on January 20. It was later defused in an open field by the personnel of the bomb disposal squad.

Mangaluru, May 20: In a gut-wrenching tragedy, a Class 10 student who was preparing for the final examinations drowned in Adyapady dam on the outskirts of the city yesterday.

The victim is Mallik, 17, a resident of Mulur village in Gurpur. The tragedy occurred when Mallik along with some others had come to the dam to catch fish.

According to the police, he accidentally slipped into the waters and drowned. His body was recovered later. 

Jurisdictional Bajpe police have registered a case of unnatural death and investigations are underway.
