Journos demand CBI probe into Dey murder

Mangalore, June 17: Journalists from a cross-section of print and electronic media under the banner of the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalist' Union have come together to condemn the brutal killing of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the incident.

Seeking immediate deterrent action against those responsible for the murder, several journalists and submitted a memorandum to Additional Deputy Commissioner Prabhakar Sharma.

The memorandum addressed to President of India Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, said that Dey's murder was nothing but an attempt to muzzle the freedom of press by criminal elements and that journalists would not bow down to them.

It also urged the President to give instruction to the Chief Ministers of all the states to take adequate measures to ensure the safety and security of the journalists.

President of the Union PB Harish Rai, Vice Presidents Ramakrishna R, Jagannatha Shetty Bala, General Secretary Srinivas Nayak, Secretary Wilfred, executive members Sudhakar Ermal, Sathyavathi, Daya Kukkaje, Harsha , Navin Shetty Soorinje, Agnes Rodrigues and others were present.

Mangaluru violence: ADGP holds meeting with senior cops

Mangaluru, Jan 5: Against the backdrop of Mangalore violence of December 19, Additional Director General of Police of Karnataka Amar Kumar Pandey visited the city and held a meeting with senior police officers.

According to senior police officials here on Sunday, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Muslim Central Committee had planned to hold a protest against CAA at Nehru Maidan while the SKSSF had called for anti-CAA protest at State Bank area.

Though both the protests had been called off, there was an apprehension of a repeat incident of December 19 violence and hence the ADGP visited the city at the behest of state government and monitored the situation here for the entire day on Saturday.

The ADGP was unhappy that despite initial inputs and the imposition of Section 144 in the city, the situation on that day escalated to a level where police had to resort to firing only in this city.

Evacuation flights from Muscat, Doha to Mangaluru via Bengaluru on May 20, May 22

Mangaluru, May 12: Air India will operate two flights - one each from Doha and Muscat - to bring back stranded Kannadigas from Qatar and Oman to Mangaluru next week.

The flight from Muscat to Mangaluru will be operated on May 20 via Bengaluru. It will depart from Muscat International Airport at 1.15 pm local time and reach Bengaluru at 6.15 pm. After the layover at Bengaluru airport, the flight will take off at 7.15 pm and land at Mangaluru International Airport at around 8.10 pm.

Doha – Bengaluru – Mangaluru flight is will be operated May 22. The flight will take off from Doha at 1.30 pm local time and will land at Bengaluru at 8 pm. It will take off from Bengaluru at 9 pm and land at Mangaluru airport around 9.35 pm.

Biggest single-day spike of over 5,000 Covid-19 cases in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Jul 23: Karnataka on Thursday recorded a biggest single-day surge of over 5,000 cases and 97 related fatalities, taking the total number of people who tested positive for the virus to 80,863, the health department said.

The day also saw a record 2,071 patients getting discharged after recovery.

Out of 5,030 fresh cases reported, a whopping 2,207 cases were from Bengaluru urban alone.

As of July 23 evening, cumulatively 80,863 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 1,616 deaths and 29,310 discharges, the health department said in its bulletin.

It said, out of 49,931 active cases, 49,291 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 640 are in ICU. Out of the 97 deaths reported on Thursday 48 are from Bengaluru urban, followed by Mysuru 8, Dakshina Kannada 7 and others.

Most of the dead are either with a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) or Influenza-like illness (ILI).

Among the districts where the new cases were reported, Bengaluru urban accounts for 2,207, followed by Raichur 258, Kalaburagi 229, Dakshina Kannada 218, and others.

Bengaluru urban district tops the list of positive cases, with a total of 39,200 infections, followed by Dakshina Kannada 4,209 and Kalaburagi 3,370.
