Gusty winds uproot tree, disrupt power supply in city

Mangalore, June 18: Gusty winds uprooted a mighty tree damaging at least five electric poles on Kalpana Road in the city on Friday evening.

The power supply was immediately cut off and the road was blocked completely making hundreds of families residing in apartments in the area suffer.

However, the workers of Mescom, fire and emergency personnel and the police swung into action to clear the road block and to restore power supply within four hours.

While the fire and emergency personnel removed the tree that was lying on the road, the team of Mescom workers replaced the damaged poles using cranes and other equipment within a short period.

It was not raining heavily and there was only drizzling for a few hours during the day.

Case filed against Pune Billava president for 'threatening' former ministers

Udupi, Jan 11: A case has been registered against Pune Billava president on the charges of issuing life threats to former Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and Dinesh Amin Mattu at the Udupi Town Police station, police sources said on Saturday.

Former Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake along with like-minded Billawa organisations and the Udupi Muslim Federation jointly scheduled an inter-religious Billawa – Muslims Harmony meet on January 11, at the Town Hall.

Journalist Dinesh Amin Mattu was the speaker and Vinay Kumar Sorake was to preside over the programme.

New findings: Over 100 sculptures recovered in Mysuru

Mysuru, Jan 5: The ongoing pilot project on documentation of all unprotected monuments in Mysuru taluk has yielded significant results with over 100 sculptures recovered from the rural hinterland.

Launched by the Karnataka Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, the project will help map and document the number of monuments in the Taluk. Based on their importance, they will be added to the protected list.

Sources in the Archaeology department said so far the team has completed mapping of monuments in two Hoblis--Varuna and Jayapura.

Shwetha Rasquinha conferred doctorate by Mangalore University

Mangaluru, Jan 2: Shwetha Rasquinha, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Social Work, St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, has been awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by the Mangalore University for her thesis titled “Effectiveness of Social work intervention on caretakers of cancer patients- A social work study in Mangalore”.

She did her studies under the guidance of Dr Rameela Shekhar, Professor (Rtd), School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru.

Ms Shwetha Rasquinha hails from Vittal, D/o Vincent Rasquinha and Late Regina Rasquinha, and is the second person to complete doctoral studies from the Vittal Parish.

Her colleagues and well-wishers have congratulated her for her highest achievement in academics and successful completion of quality research.
