Village exposure' programme for AIMIT students held

Mangalore, June 19: Eighty seven students of MCA and M Sc(Software Technology) section of AIMIT, St Aloysius College, Mangalore spent five days in Mundgod, North Karnataka, starting from 9th to 14th June, 2011. They were sent to remote villages of Mundgod taluk in groups of seven to ten. Most of the students lived with families and had a rich experience of interacting with the village folk and children. During the day some of the students spent their time in fields, sowing paddy and in the evenings they interacted with children, teaching them English and Maths.


Every year all the Post graduate students of St Aloysius College and AIMIT have such rural exposure programmes. These programmes give the students an exposure to the reality of the vast number of our villages and the life of the poor and simple people. During their stay, students also do some surveys and collect data for analysis. Most of the students appreciate this programme and are touched by the simplicity of lives of those people and the hospitality they extend to them. Some have even started NGOs to help to educate these children. This is one of the experiences which they will remember all through their life.


The programme was coordinated by Loyola Vikas Kendra, Mundgod under the leadership of Fr Arun Luwis. Fr Denzil Lobo SJ, Director, AIMIT and Fr Ozzie Mascarenhas SJ, Chairman, MBA dept of AIMIT visited the students in various villages.

Bengaluru, Feb 11: Onion price dropped to Rs 25-30 per kg on Monday, down from the dizzying Rs 200/kg in December and January. The price had spiked because of excess rain, which ruined the crop in several parts of the country.

With supply stabilising, especially from Maharashtra and northern Karnataka, and exports banned, the rate is now easing, officials said.

Consumers may be smiling but farmers are worried as they are not able to make more than Rs 17/kg as against the expected Rs 40.

"We get onions from Nasik and Sholapur in Maharashtra. Nasik onions used to be exported but since that is currently banned, they are landing in Bengaluru, leaving the market here with a surplus," said K Lokesh, president, Karnataka State Onion Merchants Association.

A farmer from Sholapur wh o was part of a onion growers' delegation which met traders in Bengaluru, said, "The cost of everything has gone up. Labour charges and fuel prices are draining us. How can we survive? How can I pay for my children's education?"

Another Sholapur farmer rued: "My daughter's wedding is in March. How am I going to meet all the expenses? I have to pay for labour, transportation, gunny bags and when everything adds up, I don't get to save more than Rs 30,000 in a month."

Mangaluru, Mar 29: Infosys Foundation Chairperson Sudha Murty has sent the second consignment of N95 Masks, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and Sanitisers worth about Rs 73 lakhs, City police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha said on Sunday.

"These will be primarily used by Doctors, Nurses and Paramedics of Wenlock Hospital here and masks by the frontline staff of ASHA and police at risk of exposure to the virus,” Dr Harsha tweeted on Sunday.

The district has received the first consignment with critical medical equipment worth Rs 28 lakh from the Infosys foundation on Saturday, March 28.

Mangaluru, Apr 15: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu Rupesh has written to her counterpart at Valsad to make food and accommodation arrangements for two persons from Puttur who are stranded at Ambergaon village in their district due to lockdown.

Valsad is a district near Gujarat-Maharashtra border.

Ashik Hussain and Mohammed Takeen Maril, have been stuck at the RTO check post of Ambergaon for the last 21 days. The duo have been staying in their car, without proper accommodation or food.
