Police arrest three, seize sandal-wood

Udupi, June 19: Personnel of DCIB arrested three persons who were transporting sandalwood logs and billets on a motorbike on Saturday under the Brahmavar police station limits.

The arrested are Sanjeeva alias Mani alias Manikanta (26) from Kinnimulky labour colony, Prakash (21), a resident of Fakiranakatte in Mallaru village, Kaup and Prashantha alias Pachu (21) of Arooru village.

Police recovered sandalwood weighing 9.670 kg, axe and other tools, mobile phone and bikes worth Rs 75,000 from the accused.

Acting on a credible, information police intercepted the bike when they were illegally transporting the sandalwood billets at Devubail near Heranje Cross, Brahmavar.

DCIB Inspector Ganesh M led the operation. ASI Narayana, staff Damodar, Satheesh Ballal, Mahabala Shetty, Rathnakar, Dinesh Shetty, Udaya Kundar, Manohar Udyavara and ANS staff took part in the operation.


Murder Accused:
Among the arrested Manikanta and Prashantha are facing several cases registered against them in different police stations across the district for offences of assault, attempt to murder, and murder.

Manikanta is the accused in the murder of Hithendra Prasad while Prashantha in the case of Sheena murder.

Bengaluru, Jul 6: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday said that the "country will have to learn to live with coronavirus as there are no options".

Yediyurappa made the remark after paying tribute to Babu Jagjivan Ram, on his death anniversary, at a ceremony in Vidhana Soudha.

"We don't have any other option, we have to learn to live with this virus. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the same thing. We have increased ambulances, we have made all arrangements to fight the pandemic. It is very important to safeguard ourselves," he said.

The Chief Minister added that the state government has made many arrangements to combat the widespread illness.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there is 23,474 number of COVID-19 cases in the state and 372 people have died due to the illness.

Mangaluru, Jan 7: A ten-year-old boy who suffered severe injuries after drowning in Kadri temple pond died on Monday,

Police said that the deceased has been identified as Sandesh, resident of Athani taluk.

Sandesh drowned while taking a dip in a pond at Kadri Shree Manjunatha Temple on Sunday evening. He was immediately rushed to the hospital in the city, however, he died on Monday morning after he stopped responding to the treatment.

Mangaluru, Jun 17: A private flight chartered by UAE-based NRI hotelier Praveen Shetty has brought home around 175 people from United Arab Emirates.

This is the third flight chartered by Mr Shetty, chairman of the Fortune Group of Hotels, and president of the Karnataka Non-Resident Indian Forum, to repatriate his employees and other stranded Kannadigas.

The Air Arabia flight with 168 adult passengers and six infants on board took off from Sharjah International Airport at 9:45 pm (UAE time) on June 16 and landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 2:50 am Indian Standard Time on June 17.
