Sanchalana' to demand govt art gallery in City

June 20, 2011

Mangalore, June 22: Pressing the demand for a government art gallery in Mangalore, Karavali Chithrakalavidara Chavadi will organise a painting exhibition 'Sanchalana' from June 24 to 29, at Prasad Art Gallery in Mangalore.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Chavadi President Ganesh Somayaji said the artists in Dakshina Kannada were demanding for a government art gallery for the last 25 years. “Recently, we had urged the former Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav to consider our long pending demand and he had responded positively to our demand. The district which had been a hub for many art forms, does not have a kala bhavan or an art gallery,” he said.

Many districts, including Bangalore, Mysore, Belgaum, Gulbarga and Dharwad have art galleries, Somayaji added.

With the district administration proposing to build a Rangamandira at Bondel, the chawadi has asked for space for an art gallery on the same premises.

The artists have asked for about 2,000 sq ft for a display hall.

“The government art gallery wherein an artist will have to pay minimum rent for the exhibition will help him to showcase his talent. This will help artists from poor background to exhibit their piece of art as well,” he added.

The expo will be inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda while DK district Kannada Sahithya Parishat President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura will preside.

Daijiworld.com Chief Editor Walter Nandalike and Alva's College Fine Arts department Dean Prof Ramdas Adyanthaya will be the chief guests.

As many as 33 artists will exhibit their paintings. The participating artists are K Shenoy, Vishnu Shevagoor, Ganesh Somayaji, Permude Mohankumar, Sayyed Asif Ali, Sharath Holla, Ananth Padmanabha, Rajendra Kedige, Anil Devadiga, Santhosh Andrade, Taranath Kairangala, Dinesh Holla, Harish Kodialbail, Jeevan A S, Sathish Rao, Veena Srinivas, Sudha Nagesh Nayak, Sapna Noronha, Reshna Shetty, Harish Marne, G Kandan, Zuber Kudla, Thyagaraj M, Pranesh K S, Jeevan Kumar, Wilson Kayyar, Ramachandra Kamath, Pramodraj, Vishwas M, Sudheer Kavoor, Muralidhar AChar, Asha Shetty and Renuka.

Bengaluru, July 17: A 60-year-old woman who tested positive for Covid-19 allegedly ended her life in the Covid ward at KC General Hospital in the early hours of Friday.

The woman, the fourth Covid positive patient to end her life since April, was a resident of Mariyappanapalya near Jnanabharathi in West Bengaluru. She was found hanging from a window grille in the passage of the Covid ward around 5 am. She had used her sari to hang herself.

The police said that the woman was admitted to the hospital on July 1. She was responding well to the treatment and was almost cured. Her son was infected first and admitted to the same hospital. As she later tested positive and got admitted, her son was discharged on July 11. The police suspect that the woman may have resorted to the extreme step due to depression.

An investigating officer quoted doctors telling the police that they were about to inform the woman about her discharge date on Friday. Doctors were waiting for the report on her latest test before discharging her.

The woman’s body will be subjected to an autopsy as per the Covid standard procedure. The Malleswaram police have taken up a case of unnatural death. Investigations are on.

On July 11, a 70-year-old man ended his life in the toilet of the Covid ward in Victoria Hospital, while a suicide was reported in the same ward on June 26. A 60-year-old woman also hanged herself in the toilet. Her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson were also admitted to hospital for Covid-19.

Bengaluru, Apr 5: The COVID-19 related lockdown has substantially improved the air quality of Bengaluru, taking it from satisfactory level to good, a senior state pollution control board offcial said here on Sunday.

"During the course of the lockdown 19 problem, we reached good position from satisfactory.

It is between zero to 50 AQI (Air Quality Index) now. We have good quality air," the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board member secretary Basavaraj Patil told PTI.

He said the indicator for knowing the air quality in

"If the AQI is zero to 50 then it is good. If it is 50 to 100 then it is satisfactory. 101 to 150 is moderate and if it is 151 to 200, then it is poor, he explained.

Patil said as per available recrods, there has been a 60 to 65 per cent reduction in pollution during the lockdown.

The city railway station and Peenya industrial area, which used to be among the areas with highest AQI, has seen pollution levels come down significantly, he said.

Another major contributor of pollution was construction activities, which too had ground to a halt due to the lockdown, resulting in zero dust emission.

Patil opined that the improved air quality would boost the immune system of the people.

"It will improve the immune system of people, including those who have breathing problems like asthma," he said.

He asked the public to learn lessons from the lockdown and later switch to sustainable means of transport such as public transport, walking and cycling,.

"We can still reduce the pollution load even after the lockdown is over," Patil said.
