Mangalore, June 21: Engineering students of the Srinivas College have invented a 'Sixth Sense Gesture Recognition System' (6S- GRS), a medium of interaction between real world and digital world.

The system is programmed in such a way that gestures made in front of the system is orally reproduced through system with which speech impaired people can easily interact with others informed Dr. Srinivs Mayya D, Principal, Srinivas Institute of Technology, here at press meet on Tuesday.

The model consists of a camera which captures the gestures and sends it in digital form to the computer where the code written in MATLAB is saved. Every gesture made by the hand has a pattern and a position which is unique. The captured image gets interpreted based on these features and the audio file corresponding to that particular gesture is triggered which is stored in the database, the team said.

Another application can be used as a gesture interpreter when a person visits a foreign country, person can still communicate with them normally by using a more enhanced version of this device.

The system has been invented by students of Electronics and Communication Engineering, B Ishaq, Arth Kumar D Rao, Anson Stephen and Faheem Adil under the guidance of Kumar K, Assistant Professor, Lokesh B, Associate Professor, Bheema Shastry, HOD, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

A car which can be controlled through mobile without a driver was introduced in the press meet. The owner can keep track on his car through 3G facility. The owner can also listen to the noise and disturbance around the car through MEMS microphone. It can also be used for military purpose to keep a track on enemies with better efficiency and one can track and trace their voice through MEMS. The technologies used in this project are MEMS and 3G.

Students who designed the project are Barun Sharma, Patel Hemalkumar, Shaikh Mohammed Shoaib under the guidance of Dr. K R Kamath, Professor and Dean, Sathish Kumar K, Assistant Professor and Mr. Lokesh B, Associate Professor and Professor Bheema Shastry, HOD, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

Bengaluru, Jun 25: Former Karnataka chief minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday claimed that there are shortage of beds and ventilators to treat COVID-19 patients in the state.

In a series of tweets, he targetted the Karnataka government on COVID-19 management.

"The state government has failed to provide adequate treatment to those infected with corona. There are no beds and no ventilators to treat more than four thousand patients. Self-induced lockdown is the only solution," he tweeted.

In his subsequent tweet, he said, "Residents of the state, including Bangalore, now have only one way to escape from COVID-19. Stay at home and celebrate yourself as a self-proclaimed lockdown. Money is not more important than life. Your life is in your hands now."

In another tweet, former Chief Minister alleged that the government has fixed Rs 10-15,000 per day for COVID-19 treatment in private hospitals.

"The state government is also saying this indirectly. The 'home remedy' in the home is to stay at home and be safe. The government has fixed Rs 10-15,000 per day for the treatment of this infection in private hospitals. How poor can afford it while upper class can't afford," he tweeted.

"If four members of a family infected with corona, the cost of treatment for a 15-day treatment at a private hospital is Rs 5-6 lakh. Where do the poor bring that Much money? We must save our lives while the government is sitting incapable. This is my concern for the people of the state," he said in another tweet.

In a video message that HD Kumaraswamy demanded the state government to give all kinds of safety and security to the students who are writing the SSLC exam tomorrow.
HD Kumaraswamy also urged students to be careful.

About 8,48,203 students will appear in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination tomorrow, said Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Wednesday.

Bengaluru, Mar 10: With concerns growing by the day, the Karnataka government is readying three more labs to test throat swab samples.

Currently, only two labs in Bengaluru — National Institute of Virology and Virus Research and Diagnostics Laboratory (VRDL) lab attached to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute — are categorised biosafety level 2+, a requirement for coronavirus tests.

Now, the government is working on upgrading three more labs, one each in the government medical colleges at Hassan, Mysuru and Shivamogga. “The labs will be ready within one week,” the authorities said.

Currently, the labs are testing only throat swab samples of suspected patients and taking 24 hours to give the results. “A patient’s blood sample will be collected only if he or she tests positive for covid-19 infection in the first throat swab sample.

While earlier the state would send all samples of suspected coronavirus cases to NIV, Pune, the two labs were upgraded to biosafety level 2+ in mid-February.
