Abducted call centre woman rescued within 24 hours, estranged husband held

Mangalore, June 21: Within 24 hours of the kidnapping of a call centre woman, the Mangalore city police not only rescued her safely but also arrested six persons on Tuesday, June 21.

Philomena Serrao (25), who works in the BPO wing of MphasiS in the city, was kidnapped by a group of five people including her estranged husband Kiran Johnson Pereira of Merlapadavu at Baithurli near Neermarga on the outskirts of the city on Monday, June 20, afternoon.

Acting on a tip off a police team raided a house at Arla in Konalu village near Nelyadi and rescued Philomena, police sources said. six persons were arrested during the raid including Kiran. The Tata Safari used to kidnap Philomena was also seized.

Mangalore rural police inspector Manjunath Shetty led the operation.

Family dispute:

After their marriage six years ago, Kiran worked for sometime at Kuwait and Philomena worked for a private company in Bangalore.

According to Philomena's mother Winnie Serrao, domestic problems increased when the couple returned to Mangalore and a year after their marriage, the couple were living separately.

Kiran, without any employment, began demanding money and beating his wife. Unable to bear the physical torture, Philomena filed three complaints and harassment in rural police station.

“After the cases were filed, the estranged husband began issuing threats urging Philomena to withdraw cases filed against him” said Winnie.

Udupi, Jan 9: State Revenue Minister R Ashoka said on Wednesday that the state government is embarking on a novel method to ensure that social security schemes were available to the beneficiaries at their doorsteps.

Speaking after inaugurating the Mini Vidhana Soudha here, he said government will look into the Aadhaar number and income certificates to decide the eligibility of the beneficiaries. The initiative will help the poor to access welfare schemes without any hassles.

The initiative will be launched as a pilot project in Udupi district. Later, the project will extend to other districts in a phased manner. In Udupi district, 30,000 beneficiaries have been identified. The government has set aside nearly Rs 7,000 crore for social security schemes. The initiative will not only eliminate middlemen menace but will help the government save Rs 1,000 crore.

Mysuru, Feb 23: A Quarantine station for rescued wild animals for rehabilitation will soon come up at Chamundi Animal Conservation, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre at Koorgalli, an independent facility developed by the Mysuru Zoo on the outskirts of the City of Palaces and it complies with the recommended quarantine procedures followed globally by Zoological gardens.

The work on the construction was expected to start soon as the tender process had been under progress.

The Zoo was using its own funds to develop the facility for multiple animal species and to ensure that no infections from the wild animals were spread to the healthy animals already in captivity since many years.

Bengaluru, May 5: Karnataka Education Minister, S Suresh Kumar on Monday announced that the SSLC exams will be held as soon as possible, the officials have been asked to be prepared.

The guidelines have been given by the Primary Education Minister to all Deputy Directors of Education departments.

"Sanitisers, masks, screening, and all guidelines will be followed at exam halls," said Kumar in a statement.

Meanwhile, Karnataka has reported 651 COVID-19 positive cases so far, said State Health Department said on Monday.
