Civic-tiger squad escapes leaving behind 'stolen goods'

Mangalore, June 22: Tense atmosphere prevailed for over half an hour near city bus terminus here, where the anti-'civic tiger' protesters gheraoed the MCC's eviction vehicle, when it was allegedly “stealing” the vegetables and fruits of hawkers on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred at around 11 am when the activists of Beedhi Badi Vyaparasthara Horata Samiti returning after staging a protest at Pandeshwar against local Corporator Divakar for his unabated support to the “expoloitation of street vendors.”

When the Samiti activists led by Sunil Kumar Bajal surrounded the 'civic tiger', its squad escaped the scene by a jeep, leaving behind the black and yellow striped vehicle and the stolen goods, eye witnesses said.

However, Bunder police rushed to the spot immediately to avoid any untoward incidents.

Mr Bajal later informed that the 'civic-tiger', apart from its routine raid on street-vendors, was stealing the stored goods of the hawkers from Nellikai Raod. “The street vendors, who do not enjoy proper facility to store their fruits and vegetables, hide them in some locations during nights. The MCC's eviction squads today traced one of such location near Intercity Hotel on Nellikai road and loaded the goods to 'civic-tiger' and tried to transport it,” he said.

“When we were returning after staging a protest at Pandeshwar, we came to know about the act of 'civic-tiger' through the helpless hawkers. The police, who were present there, did nothing to stop the squad from stealing the goods,” he said.

No resolution:

Mr Bajal said the MCC has been continuing the eviction drive, despite the fact that it did not pass any resolution so far in this regard. “This is nothing but the dictatorship of a few Corporators, as a number of Corporators strongly oppose the eviction drive,” he said adding that the Samiti has decided to hold protests against the individual corporators, who support civic-tiger operation.

Bidar, Mar 4: The Principal District and Sessions Court in Bidar, on Tuesday, granted conditional bail to five functionaries of Shaheen School management — Abdul Qadeer, Allauddin Pasha, Mehtab Sait, Bilal Inamdar and Abdul Khaleq — who moved anticipatory bail in a sedition case slapped against their school recently.

Conditions

Senior advocate B.T. Venkatesh from Bengaluru argued for the petitioners. Managoli Premavati Mallikarjuna granted bail on certain conditions, including execution of personal bond of ₹2 lakh each.

The sedition case was filed against the Shaheen School management for its children staging a play as part of their annual day celebrations on January 21, in which a character had allegedly delivered a dialogue against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

While Nazbunnisa, the mother of the child who had allegedly delivered the dialogue in the play, and Fareeda Begum, the headmistress of the school, were arrested, they were subsequently released on bail last month.

Mangaluru, Jan 29: Days after some youths allegedly threatened to 'behead' local MLA and former Karnataka minister U T Khader during a pro-CAA rally here, the Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Congress on Wednesday urged the police to register a case against the culprits.

A video of the incident that went viral on social media showed the youths raising slogans that they will "cut off his limbs and chop off his head if necessary" during the rally organised by the BJP in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday.

Addressing reporters here, District Congress Committee president Harish Kumar demanded that the police register a case on their own against the youths. He said if prompt action was not taken against the youths seen in the video, the Congress will launch an agitation before the office of the Commissioner of Police.

When asked by reporters about the video, Khader had on Tuesday brushed aside the threat, saying he had not taken it seriously. The MLA had also said he did not file a complaint with police as he had concern for the families of the youths.

Bengaluru, Jan 31: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Friday got the green signal from the BJP central leadership for the much-awaited cabinet expansion in the state and he is mostly likely to induct 11 ministers. Yediyurappa said the date of swearing-in will be decided in a day or two, although he indicated that it would most likely be held on February 3.

Currently, there are 18 ministers, including the chief minister, in the cabinet that has a sanctioned strength of 34. Sixteen berths are vacant. "Many of our suggestions have been accepted by Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president J P Nadda. If there are differences, we will discuss in Bengaluru and finalise it," Yediyurappa told reporters after meeting Shah in the Parliament Complex here.

Except for one or two, most of the disqualified JDS-Congress MLAs who got re-elected in the bypolls on BJP tickets will be made ministers, he said, adding there won't be any additional deputy chief ministers. However, sources said, a total of 11 ministers would be inducted into the cabinet.

"We discussed yesterday and now also. Shah has agreed to almost everything," Yediyurappa said, adding he is returning back "happy" after getting the nod for the cabinet expansion. "I am going happy," he said.

Yediyurappa had been anxiously waiting for the party high command's approval to expand his ministry amid intense lobbying by the aspirants. Opposition parties have been critical of the BJP and Yediyurappa over the delay in the cabinet expansion, alleging he was weak and that his administration had collapsed.
