Police nab two for assisting chain snatcher

Mangalore, June 23: Mangalore City Police have arrested two persons for selling stolen property to a jewellery store here.


The arrested are Muhammad Shareef (28), son of late M Abbas and resident of Belma in Deralakatte village and Raees Muhammad Raja (21), son of Abdul Hameed and resident of Uliya road at Ullal.

They are accused of assisting Jamaluddin, the prime accused in the extortion case, who is in judicial custody after he was arrested at Bangalore International Airport on April 21 this year. He reportedly used to snatch chains from lone women.

Police said that both Shareef and Raees Raja assisted Jamaluddin in his crime by selling and mortgaging the stolen booty in the shops.

Police recovered the valuables weighing 81 grams worth Rs 1,70,000 including a rope chain (69.220 grams) and a chain of 12 grams from 'Shalimar Gold Testing' located on New Field Road, Car Street where they mortgaged them.

Police also said Jamaluddin was absconding in a foreign country after cases registered against him two years ago. However police succeeded in arresting him when he landed at Bangalore International Airport.

During the interrogation, he spilled the beans that his friends Shareef and Raees sold and mortgaged the stolen gold.

The operation carried out under the guidance of City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, Deputy Police Commissioner M Muthuraya, Assistant Police Commissioner Ravindra K Gadadi.

Police Inspector Vinay Gaonkar, PSI Poovappa, Shivaprakash and staff Mohandas Sasihithlu, Sathish Markanja, Pradeep Rai, Rajesh Alva, Janardana, Jayantha participated in the operation.

Mangaluru, Mar 27: Amid fear of coronavirus spread, the District Collector on Friday ordered the closure of the city’s major fishing area Dhakke.

''The fish caught by us on Wednesday were dumped, without being sold'', fishermen said. Meanwhile, a few them obtained police permission and took the fish to the nearby fish mill.

All the boats which had gone for fishing are back to the dock and the port is deserted. Also, the fishermen who went fishing have been advised to return.

Tumkur, Jan 10: A five-year-old boy has been killed by a leopard in Gubi taluk of Tumkuru district in Karnataka.

The local police said today that the incident took place on Thursday evening when the boy was returning home along with his grandmother.

The leopard first attacked a cow and then the boy who was behind it. The feline dragged the body into the forest.

After a search operation by the forest officials, the body was found and handed over to the parents after post-mortem.

Bhatkal, May 8: In a shocking development 12 new coronavius positive cases were detected in Bhatkal town of Uttara Kannada district in a single day. 

Around 20 days ago an 18-year-old girl in Bhatkal was tested positive for the covid-19. The source of this infection was the First Neuro hospital located at Padil in Mangaluru where a covid-19 patient from Bantwal had undergone treatment. 

Now, the Bhatkal girl’s family members and neighbours also have tested positive for the deadly virus. Madeena Colony, Usmainya Colony, Nawayath Colony, Tengungundi Cross, Hindu Colony, Kukti Nagar, Jali Cross and Azad Nagar are sealed down by officials after the confirmation of new cases. 

Those infected include a 5-month-old baby, elderly people aged 60, 75, 83 and children aged 3, 11 and 12 years. 

Meanwhile, Kumata-Honnavar MLA Dinakar K Shetty has written to Uttara Kannada DC urging the complete seal down of Bhatkal taluk.
