Students lead cleanliness drive in city

Mangalore, June 27: A cleaning drive was held from Urwa Stores to Urwa Market by students and members of the public in the city on Sunday, said Jeevaraj Sorakke, honorary president, Mata Amritanandamayi Seva Samiti, and Managing Director, S.S.C. Hospital.

The drive was part of the “Amara Bharatham” programme of Mata Amritanandamayi Ashram. The campaign was launched in Kerala on September 27 last year and in Mangalore in May with the cleaning of the Central Market. The cleaning drive is organised every fourth Sunday to raise awareness among people not to throw garbage on the roads. “It should be segregated till the corporation picks it up,” he said.

Over 200 students and 100 members of the public participated in the cleaning drive. A truckload of garbage was collected.

Mr. Sorakke said the ashram would build 80 toilets in Mangalore. The participants had been telling shopkeepers and autorickshaw drivers to keep the areas around their workplace clean. Some banks had said they would provide 1,000 bins for the purpose, said Mr. Sorakke. The police had responded well to the cleaning drive, he said.

Mysuru, Mar 6: A woman was murdered by her husband in front of her father in the wee hours of Friday at her home in Hosakamanakoppal, Yelwal hobli here, police said on Friday.

The police said the deceased is Mamatha, a native of Periyapatna who was married to Nagesh of Hosakamanakoppal about seven years ago. The couple has a six-year-old son. Mamatha was Nagesh’s second wife as his first wife had allegedly committed suicide.

It is said that Nagesh was addicted to liquor and gambling and used to fight with Mamatha over petty reasons. 

Yesterday night too, there was a fight between the couple and Mamatha’s father pacified both of them and all of them went to sleep later.

Udupi, Apr 4: District Commissioner Jagadeesh has warned that the vehicles of people who break lockdown norms will be seized.
 
Addressing the media, he said, “People who want to buy essential items are allowed come out of the house between 1100 hrs and 1900 hrs, but we have noticed that some are unnecessarily coming out and blocking the roads. If this continues, vehicles of such people will be seized.”
 
No new COVID-19 positive cases were reported since Friday Udupi district.

New Delhi, Feb 13: Ashoka Buildcon on Thursday said it has emerged as the lower bidder for a highway project worth Rs 1,035.5 crore in Karnataka.

The project entails four laning of a section of NH-206 in the state.

Ashoka Buildcon had submitted its bid to National Highways Authority of India for the project to be built on hybrid annuity mode under Bharatmala Pariyojana, it said in a BSE filing.

"The company emerged as the lowest bidder at the financial bid opening meeting held on February 13," Ashoka Buildcon said.

The quoted bid project cost for the project is Rs 1,035.50 crore, it added.

The company's stock was trading at Rs 103.05, down 2.78 per cent, on the BSE.
