Mangalore, June 27: The week-long “aane-pramana” drama in the state reached its climax, when former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy offered the “satyada nivedane” (submission of truth) before the idol of Manjunatha, affirming his allegations of corruption against the Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa.

Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra D Veerendra Heggade had earlier cautioned both CM B S Yeddyurappa and Kumaraswamy not to turn the hallowed precincts of the temple into a political battleground.

While Mr Yeddyurappa confined his Dharmasthala visit only for “darshan” of the idol of Manjunatha, the JDS leader, despite the severe opposition from several Hindu religious leaders and staunch devotees of Manjunatha, kept his word by pledging before the deity that he stood by the charges made by him against the Chief Minister in the last six to seven months.

"After offering worship, I submitted to god that whatever I told the media on June 14 about Yeddyurappa sending his emissary to strike a compromise to refrain against further exposure of his corrupt deeds, is 100 per cent true," Mr Kumaraswamy told media persons outside the temple.

He also seized the opportunity to lash out at Yeddyurappa for “reneging” on his challenge and termed him a "betrayer" for "dragging Manjunatheshwara into a political battle".

Defending his 'truth test', Mr Kumaraswamy said he was not concerned over the modalities set for the exercise. "From my heart and soul, I have narrated everything before god. It is for the Manjunatheshwara to pronounce judgement", he said.

According to the tradition followed at the temple, aggrieved parties stand before the deity and take pledge on the issues they have been contesting, after payment of Rs 11 as fee. As per the custom, the temple authorities only facilitate the exercise, but do not interfere.

"In the last six or seven months I have released documentary evidence on the corruption involving the Chief Minister. All of them are true. I have only placed truth before people", Mr Kumaraswamy said.

"Now let people decide who is following dharma and who is on the path of adharma. Yeddyurappa gave an open challenge, but did not keep up his word", the JDS leader said, referring to the advertisements in major dailies on June 16, challenging him to come with his family to Dharmasthala to swear that the allegations levelled were true.

Dozens of JD(S) MLAs, MLCs and their supporters had been there to extend support to Mr Kumaraswamy, who claimed has launched a battle against the corrupt government from the sacred place.

Outside the temple, a group of JD(S) activists were seen shouting slogans praising Mr Kumaraswamy on the occasion, which received condemnation from Harshendra Kumar, brother of Dr Heggade. At the same time a group of people belonging to a farmers organisation shouted slogans against both Yeddyurappa and Kumaraswamy. A large number of devotees too criticised both the leaders for “disrupting” darshan schedules.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: The city police commissioner Bhaskar Rao has ordered a special inquiry by the additional commissioner in connection with sexual harassment on a girl hailing from Kasaragod and the allegation that there were attempts to convert her to another religion.

Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Shobha Karandlaje on Sunday met Rao along with the girl and gave a complaint that two youths from Kasargod had raped her and forced her to convert to their religion.

A complaint has been filed in the Kasargod police station, but no action has been taken against them. Since both the accused work in Electronics City police station jurisdiction, she urged the police to arrest them.

Rao said he was yet to gather information about the case and he had directed the additional commissioner to conduct a preliminary investigation and submit a report.

After filing a complaint, Shobha told reporters that she has been sexually harassed ever since she was a minor.

The MP said that the girl, who was brought from Kasaragod to Electronics City, where the accused youths run a business, was allegedly raped. “I have asked the Police Commissioner to direct the Electronics City police to register an FIR and arrest the youths,” she said.

“I have spoken to the survivor and she said that the youths were also forcing her to convert to Islam and threatened her with dire consequences if she did not,” the MP alleged.

Shobha went on to claim that there was a gang that could be operating to forcibly convert Hindu women to Islam. She also met Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa along with the girl’s family members and gave a petition.

Yadgir, July 2: A fresh video of the health staff dragging the body of a Covid-19 victim and dumping it into a pit disgracefully has gone viral on social media.

The incident occurred in Yadgir district of Karnataka on Tuesday, just days after shocking visuals of bodies of Covid-19 victims being handled disrespectfully in Ballari district went viral.

In the fresh video, two persons with PPE suits can be seen dragging, hurling and dumping the dead body of a senior citizen who died of covid-19. The duo dragged the body using a wooden log inserted to both hands of a plastic body bag for nearly 300 meters.

After pulling till the pit, the body was heartlessly dumped including a wooden log. Several villagers were also seen in the video.

The victim was settled in Siravara in Raichur district, although he originally hailed from Yadgir. On Sunday he was busy overseeing his daughter' wedding that was first postponed due to lockdown.

According to a relative of the deceased, on Monday he complained of breathing problems following which an ambulance was called to carry him to Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).

Raichur Deputy Commissioner (DC), R Venkatesh said he was brought dead to the hospital as he succumbed en-route. The family members were quarantined and the body was packed as per the protocols and sent to Yadgir as his family members informed that the victim is from the neighbouring district. "In Yadgir district he was swabbed and his test results came positive," DC informed.

As soon as residents of Honagera village learned about the arrival of the body, the family members were harassed asking them to not to bury the body in any of the fields in the village.

Sridevi, a relative of the deceased said "the locals assembled near our house and threatened consequences if the body was brought here. Fearing backlash, we asked the district authorities to perform the last rites in the farmland owned by the victim. But it is now saddening to see the video where the body was inhumanely dragged and dumped."

Meanwhile Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa on Wednesday (July 1, 2020) said that six staff members have been suspended in connection with the inhumane funeral of a man who died of COVID-19 in Balari district.
