Mangalore, July 1: Introspection, commitment and media-satisfaction should be the main characters of a journalist and, since journalists represent the people in the society, they should have moral responsibility, said Narendra Rai Derla, Lecturer, Shivaram Karanth Memorial First Grade College, Bellare.
He was delivering a talk on “Development Journalism” at a programme jointly organised by Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists' Union and Mangalore Press Club to mark Kannada Press Day here on Friday.
Mr Derla said the soul of media is lying in the villages. “The intimacy, values, calmness that you find in villages is the solutions for the problems too,” he said and added that there was a need to turn the focus of camera to remote and isolated villages.
Advising upcoming and practicing journalists, Mr Derla said that the reports and write-ups should make the readers to introspect themselves. The readers should be abled silently think on the issues, he said.
In his introductory remarks, Manohar Prasad, Mangalore Bureau Chief of Udayavani Kannada Daily, emphasised on the careful usage of phrases and words. He said accuracy, linguistic skills, hold on language are important aspects for a journalist.
Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel inaugurated the programme. PB Hariprasad Rai, President of DKWJU presided over the function. Ravindra Shetty compered the programme while Srinivas Nayak Indaje proposed vote of thanks.
