Beary Academy urged to bring out advanced dictionary

July 3, 2011
Mangalore, July 3: Stating that there is no connection between religion and Beary culture, senior Beary activist Aththoor Cheyyabba urged Bearys not to mix religion with Beary Sahithya Academy, which, according to him, has been working to preserve and promote Beary language, literature and culture, since its inception.

He was speaking at an interaction programme organised by Karnataka Beary Sahithya Academy here on Sunday.

He exhorted the Bearys to write in their mother tongue without any hesitation. There should be an elaborated debate on published Beary books, he suggested.

Calling upon the Academy to involve in more and more research activities on Beary language, literature and culture in the days to come, he said there is a need to bring out an advanced bi-lingual Beary dictionary.

Mr Cheyyabba, however, said that Muslims should remain within the jurisdiction of religion. In the olden days women sang peans hailing Arab kings which had nothing to do with religion, he pointed out.

KMK Manjanady, Headmaster of Sayyid Madani Highschool, Ullal said Beary language, which is already included in Prathibha Karanji competitions, can be promoted through cultural events in colleges too.

Speaking on the occasion, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, President of Dakshina Kannada district Kannada Sahithya Parishat wondered whether the setting up of all the academies after independence had “somehow taken us away from the unity of the tricolour”

MB Abdul Rahman, President of the Academy said that it is not possible to solve all the problems of the community through an institution. “It is not the aim of the Academy to solve the problems of the Beary community. It is a government institution to preserve Beary language and culture,” he said adding that the Academy, which has conducted 55 programmes within the span of 22 months since its inception, is heady towards success.

He also said that the government accredited the Bearys by granting an Academy of their own.

When one participant suggested that Academy could do something to fight dowry menace, Mr Rahman said the Academy did not have the mandate in this regard.

BA Moideen, Former State Minister presided over the function. Basheer Baikampady, Umarabba and others were present.
