Golden girl Pramila Pinto to get a hero's welcome

Udupi, July 7: Pramila Joyce Pinto, an inmate of Manasa Rehabilitation and Training Centre at Pambur in Udupi district, has won a gold medal and a bronze medal in roller skating event held at the 13th Special Olympics World Summer Games held at Athens in Greece from June 25 to July 4.

Trustee of the Centre Remedia D'Souza told presspersons here on Wednesday that Ms. Pinto had won the gold medal in 'roller skating 30 metres straight line race' at the Athens Special Olympics. She had won a bronze medal in the roller skating 30 metres slalom race.

The 13th Special Olympics World Summer Games at Athens, was one of the largest sporting event for athletes with developmental disabilities, attracting nearly 7,000 athletes from over 180 countries and, 3,000 coaches and officials.

To commemorate the achievements of Ms. Pinto at the Athens Special Olympics, a procession would be held from Bantakallu Cross Road to Pambur on Thursday. Students from Pambur Church School and Narayanaguru School and inmates of Manasa Rehabilitation Centre would participate in the procession. Ms. Pinto would be welcomed earlier at Katapady in the district. She would be felicitated at the Manasa Rehabilitation and Training Centre at Pambur.

Ms. Pinto was trained by Lakshminarayana Upadhya of Ambagilu before she left for the Athens Special Olympics. She had participated in other sports events such as National Coaching and Championship Camp in Hyderabad from September 14 to 19, 2009; two camps in Puducherry from June 12 to 16, 2010 and in Hyderabad from October 24 to 30, 2010.

Besides being good at sports, Ms. Pinto had been good at cultural activities. She had participated in various cultural competitions such as dance, singing, drawing, and fancy dress held in different parts of the district and won prizes , Ms. D'Souza said.

Principal of the centre Thelma Lewis, a teacher at the centre Hemalatha, social worker Anil D'Souza, and Louis D'Almeida, president of Catholic Sabha, Udupi province, were present.

Bidar, Apr 2: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Thursday confirmed that 11 people out of 27 in Bidar, who had participated in Tablighi Jamaat at Delhi's Nizamuddin Markat have been tested positive for COVID-19.

Speaking to news agency, Karnataka Health Minister said, "We are monitoring 362 people who had attended Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi. Out of 27 people from Bidar who had attended, 11 have tested positive for COVID-19, while results of 16 others are awaited. Total positive cases in the state are 121."
Meanwhile, Tablighi Jamaat's Maulana Saad has stated that he will fully support the government in its fight against the coronavirus.

This comes soon after an FIR was registered against him in connection with the religious gathering organised in Markaz Nizamuddin area of the national capital.

A huge religious gathering was held at the Markaz building in Nizamuddin between March 13-15, the event came into the spotlight after multiple coronavirus cases were confirmed amongst those who attended the event held in mid-March.

An FIR has been registered against Tablighi Jamaat head Maulana Saad and others under the Epidemic Disease Act 1897 in Delhi.
A total of 2,361 people were brought out from the Markaz in a joint operation by authorities which lasted for over 36 hours, following which the South Delhi Municipal Corporation had carried out a sanitisation of the premises and nearby area.

Bengaluru, Apr 19: With six new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, Karnataka's total count of coronavirus patients has surged to 390, said the State's Health Department on Sunday.

"Six new cases have been confirmed for COVID-19 in the State from 5 pm yesterday till 5 pm today. Cumulatively, 390 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state," said the Health Department in a statement.

The total coronavirus cases in the State include 16 deaths and 111 discharges.

Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan said that "only essential and critical number of" employees of the Information Technology (IT) companies will be allowed to work from offices from April 20 onwards in Bengaluru, while others will have to continue working from home.

According to the latest update by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of positive cases in India has mounted to 16,116 and 519 deaths have been reported till now.

Mangaluru, Jan 8: The Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, has finally received green signal from the city police to hold an awareness meet against CAA, NRC and NPR on January 15, but on the outskirts of the city.

The Committee, which is a kind of umbrella body of Muslim organisations of the two coastal districts, had twice cancelled its planned protest against the same at Nehru Maidan, in the heart of the city due to permission denial by the city police. 

Addressing a press conference here today, Committee chairman, KS Mohammed Masood said that event will be held at Shaha Garden near Central Juma Masjid at Adyar Kannur.

He said that the representatives from the 28 different organisations unanimously finalised the date and venue after a consultations as the police refused to grant permission to hold the event at Nehru Maidan or Town Hall.

Representatives of various organisations including S M Rasheed Haji, Ibrahim Kodichal, B M Mumtaz Ali, Rafeeuddin Kudroli and Abdul Rasheed Zaini were present at the press meet.
