Special Olympics medalists get a rousing welcome in city

Mangalore, July 8: The youngsters with special abilities, who have made the twin-district of coastal Karnataka proud by winning four gold medals and two bronze medals in the just-concluded Special Olympics in Athens, were given a grand welcome on Friday in the city.

Master Royston Pinto (20), country's fastest skater among special persons, who works in a private bank, Dhanya Rao (14), who has won medals in national level meets, and Anli Mendoca, a Student of St Agnes Special School are the Special Olympics medalists from Mangalore. Pramila Pinto (20) is from Pambur in Udupi.

While Royston won the 1,000 M speed skating race in the higher ability category, Dhanya, bagged two gold medals, one in the 30 M Slalom Race where she had to make snake-like movement between five equidistant cones and 30 M Straight Line Race, in the lower ability category. Pramila, who participated in the lower ability category but in the higher age group, bagged gold in 30 M Straight Line and bronze in 30 M Slalom Race. Anil Mendonca bagged a bronze medal in volleyball.

Soon after the four achievers arrived at KSRTC Bus Stand at around 9:30 am, they were on a grand procession through PVS Circle to Chetana Bala Vikasa Kendra, where Asha Jyothi, a forum for the physically challenged and their parents, honoured them in the presence of Mayor Praveen Anchan, MCC Commissioner KN Vijayaprakash, Zilla Panchayat President KT Shailaja Bhat and other dignitaries.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Vijayaprakash said that medalists have set a model for the entire country by overcoming their disabilities through hard work and commitment.

Mayor Anchan announced that a cash award of Rs 50,000 would be given to each winners from the MCC, while Ms Bhat said that ZP would give incentives to them.

After receiving the felicitation all the four medalists expressed their whole hearted gratitude to their parents, coaches, for their support and cooperation and also thanked the people for their encouragement.

Mangaluru, Apr 17: Authorities in Dakshina Kannada have announced a fresh coronavirus positive case. The patient is a resident of Uppinangady in Puttur taluk.

With this the total number of covid-19 positive cases in this coastal district mounted to 13 even though most of the patients have recovered and returned home after treatment.

In past twelve days this is the first coronavirus case reported in the district.

It is learnt that the 39-year-old had been to Delhi. He was home quarantined for past few days. His throat swabs were tested positive for the deadly disease today.

Kochi, Jan 12: Golden Kayaloram, the fourth and last Maradu residential apartment was razed by controlled implosion in Kochi on Sunday afternoon as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

The building came crashing down, leaving the entire area in a cover of white smoke.

Earlier today, Jain Coral Cove, the apartment having the maximum number of housing units among the illegally built buildings, was razed down at 11:02 am.

The authorities coordinated the operations from a control room set up at the office of the Inland Waterways Authority of India.

As per municipal records, there were 122 housing units in Jain Coral Cove and 41 in Golden Kayaloram.

The prohibitory orders that were clamped in the area will remain imposed for the day. The district administration on Saturday imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

On Saturday, the 19-floor H2O Holy Faith apartment complex with 90 flats and the Alfa Serene complex with twin towers were demolished at 11 am and 11:05 am respectively.

The buildings are razed for violating the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules. The directions in this regard were passed by the Supreme Court last year.

Hassan, Jul 16: In fresh incident of cast killing, a Dalit youth in Alur taluk of Hassan district was shot dead yesterday by the relatives of the girl with whom he was in love. 

The deceased identified as Madhu, a 30-year-old resident of Soppinahalli village. He had taken a 25-year-old girl with him and was planning to marry her after taking her family into confidence.  

The relatives of the girl, who belong to upper caste, claimed that Madhu had kidnapped the daughter of one Ramesh of the same village. The girl's uncle Rupesh had waylaid Madhu when he was on the way to the field and shot at him. 

The body of the deceased as been shifted to a mortuary. The accused Rupesh has gone absconding. Sources said that the family of Ramesh has strongly opposed the inter-caste marriage.
