Banned in India, unfazed Ashwini sprints to US

Mangalore, July 12: A week ago when her 'A' sample tested positive for anabolic steroids, India's star athlete Ashwini Akkunji did not go into hiding. Nor did she crumble. “The bottomline is I'm a fighter not a quitter,” the 23-year-old Mangalorean told media, ready to weather the storm that has rocked her fledgling career On Monday, shortly after the optional 'B' test which she had pitched for also returned a positive result, and it became all too clear that her 2012 London Olympic dreams were all but over, the 400m Asian Games gold medallist has begun charting her future.



She said, “I'm only 23 and still have many years of athletics left in me. “If the situation gets worse, I will go abroad for training.” Ashwini's career is certain to come to a standstill though the extent of the ban — which could stretch up to two years — will only be known after the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) panel hearing. Knowingly, or unknowingly, Ashwini and the relay quartet have fallen prey to the doping influence but the talented athlete is not calling it quits.



“I didn't expect the 'B' sample test to be any different from the 'A' sample because it is the same sample in a different bottle. I will now wait to go in front of the Anti-doping hearing panel to put forward my case. “I'm not worried because my conscience is clear. The truth will come out some day, and I'll wait for that day to answer my critics.” “I can't comment on the outcome of the hearing, since it is not in my hands. But I'm sure my career is not yet over. In the eventuality of a ban, I'll continue to train hard and make a comeback.”

Jun 4: Belur Mutt, the global headquarters of Ramakrishna Mutt and Ramakrishna Mission, has decided to throw open its gates to the devotees from June 15 after putting in place all safety measures required to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The gates of the sprawling premises of the mutt set up by Swami Vivekananada at Belur near here was closed since the lockdown was announced in March by the Centre. The Mutt has devotees from across the globe.

The secretary of Belur Mutt Ramakrishna Mutt and Ramakrishna Mission, Swami Suvirananda said in a statement that as the easing down of lockdown measures announced by the Centre and the state did not indicate the threat caused by COVID-19 pandemic is over, the authorities thought it prudent to put in place all the measures required before opening the gates of the Mutt and all RKM centres in the country for the scores of devotees.

The statement was issued on June 1, the day religious places of worship were thrown open by the West Bengal government.

"We had to think about both aspects - the issue of public health and also the wish of our devotees for having a darshan of the shrines of Swami Vivekananda, Sri Sarada Maa and Ramamrishna Paramahansa. But we believe spirituality and sceintific temparament must go hand in hand," he told reporters on Thursday.

"Therefore it is imperative for us to consult experts and put in place adequate arrangement and infrastructure" before opening the (Belur Mutt) gates," he said.

The senior monk said the timing of the opening and closure of the shrine and all other details conforming the health protocol and guidelines will be announced before opening date.

The Mutt complex had become totally out of bound for visitors from March 24 when the lockdown was clamped. There was restricted entry to it since May 16.

Udupi, Feb 11: In a tragic incident, a 62-year-old man from Chennai died of drowning in Sri Krishna Mutt’s Madhwa Sarovar (pond) during the wee hours of Tuesday.

Police said the deceased has been identified as Capt G Sridharan.

It is suspected that Sridharan accidentally fell into the holy pond while taking a bath. The incident is said to have occurred around 4 a.m.

Udupi, Jan 8: Senior journalist Raviraj Valalambe passed away due to suspected cardiac arrest on Tuesday night at his residence in Kinnimulki, here. He was 50.

Raviraj was rushed to a hospital after he complained of chest pain. He breathed his last on way to medical facility.

He was the director of Prime TV, a local Kannada news channel.

He had worked as a reporter for ETV and Suvarna News channel earlier.

He is survived by wife and two daughters.
