Bangalore, July 13: More than the farmers, it's the voice of the pontiffs which is feared the most by the BJP government in Karnataka.

Succumbing to the threat of an indefinite hunger strike by Vishvesha Thirtha Swami of Pejawar mutt, the Karnataka government on Tuesday denotified 1,998.03 acres of land acquired for a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Mangalore.

On Tuesday morning, the pontiff had threatened to go on a fast from Wednesday. By night, the government issued the denotification order.

Likening forcible acquisition of farmers' land to forcing people to change their caste, Vishvesha Thirtha Swami said the government should not acquire fertile land for industrial purposes.

"Only barren land should be acquired. Acquisition of fertile land goes against central and state government guidelines,'' he maintained.

On learning about the pontiff's plan, industries minister Murugesh R Nirani took chief minister B S Yeddyurappa's permission, requested the pontiff to drop the idea of going on a hunger strike, and announced the denotification — all in a matter of a few hours.

As the seer insisted on a government order, the government acted swiftly and issued the order by night.

The problem had begun after the KIADB, on May 10, 2007, issued a preliminary notification for acquisition of an additional 2,035.31 acres (including 37.28 acres of government land) for phase II of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) project . People and several NGOs opposed the acquisition, and the pontiff supported their cause.

The ONGC, a premier enterprise of the Union government , is establishing the SEZ near Mangalore. It is to set up downstream units for Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd.

Hubli, Mar 9: A Hubli court on Monday rejected the bail application of three Kashmiri students, who were booked for sedition, after their video allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans went viral.

The plea was filed under Section 439 of CrPC.

This comes after the Hubli Bar Association earlier withdrew its resolution against representing the three Kashmiri students and said that advocates who wish to appear for them can approach Dharwad Principal District Court to file bail plea.

The three students are Basit Ashik Sophi (19), Talib Majid (19) and Amir Mohiuddin (23). They were booked under sedition charges for raising pro-Pakistan slogan in a video shared on social media.

They were earlier transferred to Belgaum Hindalga jail from Hubli sub-jail and the case, registered in Gokul Road police station, was also transferred to the rural police station because the video was recorded in the college hostel room, which is in its jurisdiction.

Mangaluru, Jun 11: City police on Thursday filed a 700-page chargesheet in connection with the arrest of Aditya Rao, 36, accused of planting an IED at Mangaluru International Airport on January 20.

The chargesheet said the bag placed near MIA entrance had a real bomb, as per the FSL report. The IED in the tin box was made of sulphur, ammonium nitrate, potassium chlorate and charcoal.

Rao, an engineer, who learnt bomb-making through online videos, had also placed a timer along with it and sharp objects such as nails and metals. However, he had not fixed wires to trigger a blast. “His intention was not to cause a blast but only to create a scare,” said sources.

The bomb was made in less than two weeks. However, it had taken Rao several days to procure raw materials. Police had completed the chargesheet process in April.
