Mangalore, July 15: Residents of an apartment and surrounding villas near Nandigudda in Jeppu had to spend the whole night in anxiety and fear as a giant banyan tree leaned onto the building in a potentially dangerous manner following heavy rains on Thursday.

The 150-year-old banyan tree, which had partially got uprooted just a couple of weeks back, could not withstand the accompanied with gusty winds and leaned precariously on to the four-storeyed Opera Plaza near Vishal Garage at around 10.30pm.

Anxious residents came out of their houses to witness the shocking scene and vented ire against the Mangalore City Corporation authorities for having left the work incomplete following the earlier fall on June 28.

The MCC operation earlier had left the giant branches of the tree standing on inadequate root and efforts by the local people to convince the authorities about the potent danger had yielded little result.

T.K. Sudheer, a resident of the area and the Congress leader pointed out that the issue was brought to the notice of the commissioner Vijaya Prakash recently. He promised to examine the issue and take necessary action. “But nothing has happened afterwards,” he rued.

With the tree leaning dangerously onto the building, people started calling up MCC officials and the fire service, which arrived at the scene within minutes but could hardly do anything but watch the tree in amusement.

The MCC assistant executive engineer Ganesh also visited the spot and had to face the wrath of the local residents, who blamed the callousness of the MCC for the present situation.

“This is probably the tallest tree in the city. This was a disaster waiting to happen,” said Bhaskar Rao, former corporator, who runs a shop just below the falling tree.

Even as the anxious residents watched helplessly, the fire service personnel with their vehicle disappeared from the scene and the “frantic search” by the assistant executive engineer hardly yielded any result.

“We went around looking for people to get the work done. But, unfortunately we could not find them. We are at it. We are also equally worried,” said the official on his third visit to the spot.

When asked him why the MCC authorities left the work incomplete, he said, the branches were cut adequately and “as per the instructions of the local people”.

But Sudheer pointed out that the MCC does not have necessary infrastructure to deal with the crisis of this nature. “They just don't have enough manpower. There is also dearth ofequipment” he said.

Kasaragod, Apr 10: Eleven people died so far in Kerala's northern district Kasargod as they could not access medical facilities in Mangaloru since the border roads were blocked by the Karnataka Government, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

Addressing a press conference at the Government Secretariat here, the Chief Minister said, "It is really unfortunate that people from Kasargod district in Kerala are still being denied treatment in hospitals at Mangalore in Karnataka State."

"We will improve the medical facilities in Kasargod and if necessary, patients will be airlifted to the neighbouring districts in Kerala to provide emergency medical assistance," he added.

Bengaluru, May 10: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday accused the state government of not preparing proper guidelines to bring back people who are stranded near the Karnataka-Maharashtra border areas.

"No proper guidelines have been given to officials to bring back people who are stranded near the Karnataka-Maharashtra border. From the last 45 days, many of these people have not got any relief nor are there any proper directions or guidelines from the state government," alleged Kumaraswamy.

He also accused the state government of cheating the people of Karnataka.

"Karnataka government is cheating people the same way it cheated with the flood compensation. The state government had announced lakhs of rupees as compensation to those who lost houses in the flood last year. But nobody has got the records or details as to how many people got benefited from it," he added.
Fifty-three more COVID-19 cases were reported in Karnataka on Sunday, the state government said.

The total number of cases in the state is at 847, including 405 discharged and 31 deaths so far, the bulletin said.

Mangaluru, Jun 28: The patience and presence of mind exhibited by the family members of youth covid-19 victim thwarted the attempt by a few miscreants to create communal disharmony in the coastal city today.

A 31-year-old youth from Idya in Surathkal, who was under treatment for covid-19 at designated Wenlock Hospital in the city, passed away last night.

Even though there is a Muslim graveyard under the jurisdiction of Idya mosque, it was waterlogged due to heavy rains.

Hence, the Idya mosque management had obtained permission from Mangaluru’s Bolar mosque management to bury the mortal remains of the youth in Bolar graveyard.

All necessary arrangements were made at the Bolar graveyard for the burial this morning. Meanwhile, a few residents of Bolar belonging to another community staged a protest against bringing covid-19 victim’s mortal remains to Bolar.

Mohammad Husain, general secretary of Bolar mosque, said that the family members of the departed youth exhibited their presence of mind and urged the Muslims of Bolar to preserve communal harmony.

“The Bolar mosque committee had given green signal for the burial and all arrangements were made. Meanwhile, a few people staged protest and warned us against burying the covid-19 victim’s body. When the aggrieved family members came to know this, they immediately cancelled the plan,” he said.

“The aggrieved family requested us to uphold communal amity and co-existence. They decided to bury the body in Idya itself. Then the protesters also returned,” he said.

Burial in Bolar after DC’s intervention

When the mortal remains were being taken towards Surathkal in the ambulance, the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada ordered the authorities concerned to take a U-turn and bring back mortal remains to Bolar.

The DC said it was wrong to take the mortal remains to another place after making all necessary armaments in Bolar graveyard. In order to pacify the porters it was decided to dig another grave on the other side of the graveyard, sources said.
