Land acquisition for MSEZ: Pro-farmer forum lashes out at KCCI

Mangalore, July 17: The Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Vedike criticized a recent move by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industries supporting the land acquisition for Mangalore Special Economic Zone.

KBSV President Madhukar Amin on Saturday addressing a media conference, said that the KCCI doesn't know the reality. He invited the KCCI President GG Mohandas Prabhu, who has recently written to the government pressurising to acquire the land for MSEZ, and its members to hold an open discussion with the farmers to understand the reality.

“The KCCI President who has mentioned MSEZ as 'General Purpose Multi Product Zone' in his letter written to Large and Medium Scale Industries Minister Murugesh Nirani, probably has forgotten that the same KCCI in its first letter on SEZ written to the Chief Minister in 2001 had requested the government to keep Mangalore away from the hazardous industries. In contrast, the KCCI is now favouring to establish hazardous industries in the region,” he said.

Mr Amin lashes out at KCCI for portraying fertile land of the four villages as barren land, to convince the government that the land is suitable for industries.

KBSV member Hemalatha Bhat criticised the KCCI for claiming that setting up of MSEZ would give employment to 1,25,000 people.

In the last three years, SEZ has not employed even 500 people and how can they assure to provide jobs to 1 lakh and odd people, she asked. Quoting the statement of the head of ONGC who had said that hazardous industries demand highly skilled labourers, far more skilled than the graduates from Karnataka Polytechnic College, she questioned how can the MSEZ provide jobs as per the given assurances.

Welcoming the decision of the State government to stop the land acquisition for MSEZ, the Forum members said that they have emerged victorious in the first fight but they would continue fighting against the setting up of large scale hazardous industries in the district.

Bengaluru, May 31: With places of worship expected to reopen on June 8, the Karnataka State Minorities Commission has released guidelines for mosques and dargahs, that include social distancing, temperature testing and compulsory hand washing.

Abdul Azeem, commission chairman said, "Everyone will have to maintain one-metre distance and carry their prayer mats. They will all be scanned and Farz prayers will be held for 10-15 minutes. Friday prayers should be completed within 20 minutes."

Distribution of tabarukh, shaking hands, and overcrowding inside mosques will not be allowed.  The Muzrai department also issued guidelines for temples, like mandatory face masks, sanitisation of sanctum sanctorum and thermal screening.

In a letter, the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowment Department mentioned that while temple authorities and devotees should wear masks, priests, helpers and workers are exempt, in the core area of the temple.

"Devotees should be scanned using infrared thermometers at the temple entrance, and must be given hand sanitiser. The temple trust is expected to bear the expenses," it added.

Udupi, Mar 26: As many as 1000 expatriates, who have arrived from foreign countries and have been placed in home quarantine, were warned against violating the guidelines given to them and leaving their houses. 

Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha, addressing reporters here on Thursday, said that the district administration and health department officials have sent notices to surrounding houses regarding those quarantined and requested them to bring to the notice of relevant authorities if anyone was found violating the quarantine rules.

'If anyone is found violating the quarantine rules and roaming in public, a complaint can be registered by calling on 9480242600. Strict action will be taken against such violators,' said Mr Jagadeesha.

Bengaluru, May 5: Karnataka Education Minister, S Suresh Kumar on Monday announced that the SSLC exams will be held as soon as possible, the officials have been asked to be prepared.

The guidelines have been given by the Primary Education Minister to all Deputy Directors of Education departments.

"Sanitisers, masks, screening, and all guidelines will be followed at exam halls," said Kumar in a statement.

Meanwhile, Karnataka has reported 651 COVID-19 positive cases so far, said State Health Department said on Monday.
