Mangalore University VC conferred Honorary Colonel rank

Mangalore, July 20: Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy was conferred with the honorary rank of Colonel Commandant by the Director General of National Cadet Corps (NCC), Ministry of Defence at a solemn ceremony on the University Campus at Mangalagangothri near here on Wednesday.

He is the third VC of the Mangalore University after his predecessors B Hanumaiah, and K M Kaveriappa to receive this honorary rank conferred by the NCC directorate.

Responding to the honour, Mr Murthy promised to shoulder the responsibility of promoting the NCC in all institutions affiliated to the University.

Laying emphasis on the role of NCC in the country, Prof Murthy pointed out that NCC cadets were second line of defence during India's war with Pakistan. “The cadets were transporting weapons to the war field and helping the soldiers,” he said.

He said that there is a need to motivate the students to take up career in armed force.

The Vice Chancellor said that NCC not only trains youth to be disciplined citizens of the country, but also helps in developing qualities courage and leadership and spirit of adventure, which is very necessary for any generation.

He said although till 1970s, NCC cadets were given rigorous training, after 1973, the syllabus was modified and more prominence has given to discipline.

Around 5,000 colleges and 7,000 schools across the country have NCC, he informed.

In the visitors book, Prof Murthy wrote “It was very impressive function and guard of honour. The cadets looked smart. I assure all cooperation from the university.”

NCC Group Commander Colonel Dinesh P Naikvada, speaking on the occasion, said this rank would enable the Vice-Chancellor to closely interact with NCC units, officers, and cadets in the university and guide them to uphold the ideals of the NCC.

Six other VCs

Apart from Prof Murthy, other six Vice Chancellors from different parts of India have been chosen for the rank of honorary colonel commandant in 2010-11.

They are S C Sharma (Tumkur University, Tumkur), A Jayakrishnana (University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram), Mohammad Iqbal Ali (Satavahana University, Karimnagar), Govind Prasad Mishra (Madhya Pradesh Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwavidyala, Jabalpur), and K Meena (Bharathidasan University, Trichy). Naveen Mathur, VC of Jai Naraian Vyas University, Jodhpur chosen for this honour passed away a month ago.

Belagavi, Jun 6: Suspecting that cow meat was being transported to Goa, unidentified persons set goods vehicle on fire near Karle village in Belagavi taluk last night.

The Incident came to the fore on Saturday morning.

Usually, vehicles carrying vegetables, milk and other essentials being transported to Goa and other towns plying via Karle village near Belagavi.

Sources said that for the past few days vehicles carrying meat were stopped and were handed over to police by section of activists suspecting it to be cow meat.

Persons who set the vehicle on fire were yet to be identified. Jurisdictional Belagavi Rural police have rushed to the spot. More details were awaited.

Mangaluru, May 22: An elderly cardiac patient from Dakshina Kannada, who was stranded in Saudi Arabia due to covid-19 lock-down, has finally reached his homeland thanks to the timely intervention by Humanity Forum Jubail and Indian Social Forum.

The elderly man hailing from Kadaba area of Dakshina Kannada was admitted to a hospital in Madinah. However, his condition continued to worsen due to lack of proper treatment. The efforts by his family members to bring him back home had not yielded results.

Meanwhile, one of the relatives of the patient, Ansari Suratkal, who happens to be a DKSC activist, brought the issue to the notice of the Karnataka unit of the Indian Social Forum in Dammam. ISF contacted Humanity Forum president Zakariya Jokatte, who helped the patient to speak directly union minister D V Sadananda Gowda in a video conference organised by coastaldigest.com.

Humanity Forum also persuaded the Indian Embassy to allow the stranded cardiac patient to fly back to India through Dammam-Bengaluru repatriation flight on May 20. 

However, it was not easy for the patient to travel from Madinah to Dammam International Airport due to lock-down and curfew. ISF not only obtained travel permission for him but also arranged vehicle. Jeddah and Riyadh units of ISF helped in obtaining permission letter in their respective places in spite of travel ban imposed by the police. Madinah unit of ISF arranged vehicle for transportation. Zakariya Jokatte bore the air ticket and other expenses of the patient.

Chennai, July 27: Multi-lingual actress Vijayalakshmi, who attempted suicide yesterday, alleging harassment and bullying by followers of Naam Thamizhar party leader Seeman and Panankattu Padai’s Hari Nadar, is recuperating at a hospital in Chennai. 

Vijayalakshmi is known for films like Friends and Boss Engira Baskaran. She recently made headlines for speaking against Seeman and the torture she was allegedly facing from the actor-turned-politician and his party.

In the video which was uploaded on Sunday evening, Vijayalakshmi said, “This is my last video and I have been in tremendous stress in the last four months because of Seeman and his partymen. I tried my level best to survive all these days because of my mother and sister, but I have been humiliated in the media by Harinadar recently.”

She added, “I would like to tell fans who are watching the video just because I was born in Karnataka, Seeman has tortured me a lot. As a woman, I have put up with it to my highest capabilities. I won’t be able handle the pressure anymore. I am from the Pillai community, the same community LTTE leader Prabhakaran is part of. Prabhakaran is the only reason Seeman is who he is today, but now he has been harassing me on social media continuously. You slut shamed me to make me feel the pain and it is up to me to decide on what to do after facing such insults from you. I request my fans not to let Seeman get away from this case. He should never get anticipatory bail. My death should be a big eye-opener to everyone. I don’t want to be a slave to anybody.”
