Ullal terror accused Muhammad Ali released on bail

Mangalore, July 20: More than a month after his son was released, Muhammad Ali, a 60 year old resident of Ullal, who was arrested on terrorism charges nearly three years ago, walked free from Bangalore Central Jail located in Parappana Agrahara on Wednesday, July 20.

Mohammad Ali was dragged out of his home at Ullal along with his son Javed Ali (22), in a pre-dawn operation carried out by Mumbai Police with the help of Karnataka Anti-Naxal Force and the Dakshina Kannada district Police, on October 3, 2008.

Following the arrest cases were filed against the father and son in Mangalore and Mumbai under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act 1999 (MCOCA). Javed Ali was released on June 16.

After a prolonged hearing, Mohammad Ali was granted bail by the Special Court under the MCOCA in an order passed on May 6, 2011, and later by a Mangalore Sessions Court on July 18. The release order was issued on July 19, after the surety was deposited with the court.

Mohammad Ali has been asked to appear before Ullal police station on second Saturday's every month.

He is expected to appear before Mumbai and Mangalore courts on August 1 and August 11 respectively for hearing.

Hariprasad, Ahmed given tickets to strengthen the party: DK Shivakumar

Bengaluru, Jun 19: Congress leaders BK Hariprasad and Naseer Ahmed filed their nominations as party candidates for Legislative Council elections in Bengaluru and KPCC chief DK Shivakumar said that the two leaders have been given ticket to strengthen the party with their guidance.

"The Legislative Council means the Upper House and the Elders House. We have unanimously agreed to select and send these two senior leaders to discuss the party organization and various issues of the state in Legislative Council. There were plenty of aspirants to enter the Upper House. But it is decided to elect these two leaders and they will contest the election," Shivakumar said.

"We need seniority to guide us... That's the reason we are selecting these leaders... The high command has given these senior leaders the opportunity to discuss with all our leaders about strengthening the party," he added.

The elections are scheduled to be held on June 29.

Man kills wife, 4-yr-old child, then hangs self over fear of losing job amid covid crisis

Dharward, Jul 25: In a shocking incident, a man reportedly killed his wife and daughter by feeding them poison and ended his life by hanging in his house. The incident took place in Dharwad on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Mounesh Pattar (36), his wife Arpita (28) and their four-year-old daughter Sukruta.

Mounesh was working in a private company in Dharwad and was depressed from the last one week fearing job loss.

It was alleged that he might lose his job as the management decided to remove more than 40 employees due to covid -19 lockdown.

On Friday late night, he reportedly gave poison to his wife and daughter and later committed suicide by hanging self. The incident came to light on Saturday morning.

A case is registered at Sub Urban police station and further investigation is on.

Women lead massive protest demanding liquor ban in Karnataka

Bagalkote, Jan 27: The bank of Krishna River in front of Sangamantha Temple at Koodalasangama in Karnataka today witnessed the launch of women’s indefinite strike demanding liquor ban in the state.

Thousands of women from various parts of Karnataka have taken part in the strike being organised under the banner of 'Karnataka Madya Nisheda Andolana'.

The strike was launched to draw the attention of the state government to press for a complete ban on the sale of liquor across the state.

About 50 various organizations and religious pontiffs have extended their support for the strike. Food is being cooked on the bank of the river for the agitating women.

The women from Chikmagalur, Tumakuru, Raichur and Ballari districts are taking part in it.
