Mangalore, July 22: A woman, who is accused of cheating her neighbor after borrowing gold jewellery, allegedly attempted to commit suicide on Thursday by consuming kerosene.

However, 35 year old Semiya, wife of Aliyabba, a resident of Paddandadka near Venur in Belthangady taluk, was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Mangalore.

It can be recalled that Semiya's neighbour Shamshad, who was allegedly gang-raped by two friends of the former- Farooq (30) and Naushad (34), had urged the police to take action against her for persuading the rapists.

Shamsahd's allegation

According to Shamshad, her neighbour Semiya had taken the gold jewellery from her some eight months ago to attend a marriage function with a promise to return by the same evening. However, she did not return them despite repeated requests.

She alleged that Semiya had handed over her gold to her friend Riyaz, who is also a native of Paddandadka.

Shamshad said that on June 30, Semiya invited her for a 'compromise meeting', in which two strange people- Naushad and Farooque-were also present.

Later, when she had been to Moodbidri on July 18, for her son's treatment, Naushad and Farooq, approached her and asked to accompany them to meet Riyaz, promising to arrange for the return of jewellery.

“After convincing me, the duo engaged an auto-rickshaw and took me to an unknown location, where the auto-driver stepped down and one among the duo continued to drive till reaching a forest area near Gantalkatte, where they both assaulted and gang-raped me,” she said.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered against Farooq and Naushad at Moodbidri police station.

Bengaluru, Apr 17: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Thursday served a show cause notice to a Kannada news channel for broadcasting a programme in which it purportedly said that the Centre would 'air drop money' to the poor, owing to the COVID-19 lockdown.

The notice said that the channel was "spreading false information, creating panic and social unrest.

" The channel had allegedly aired a show titled, "Helicopter Money" on Wednesday which claimed that the Centre would drop money from helicopters during the lockdown period.

A Twitter user took a serious note of it and complained to the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar.

The fact check team of the Press Information Bureau, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, refuted the claim.

In its notice to the channel, PIB said, "You are hereby directed to show cause why your channel should not be taken out of air immediately. You are instructed to send your reply in this regard within 10 days of receipt of this notice."

Reacting to the notice, the management of the news channels said, "A programme which has been seen in bits and pieces and those who have not even seen the programme appears to have complained. Notice will be replied accordingly."
