Bishop meets city police chief; expresses concern over delay in withdrawal of Church attack cases

Mangalore, July 23: It was one of the rare occasions on Friday evening when the Bishop of Mangalore diocese, Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D Souza, lost his temper when he told the City Police Commissioner that he is ashamed to visit the latter's office as the chief minister as well as home minister have failed to keep their words on disposal of cases related to church attacks dated September 14-15, 2008.

“Though Chief Minister B?S?Yeddyurappa had made a promise to withdraw all the cases pertaining to church attacks about six months ago, the promises have remained only on paper. On the other hand, the cabinet too has not taken any decision in this regard, the Bishop rued.

Stating that 29 persons were issued summons to appear before JMFC III court on July 21, the Bishop regretted that 28 others have been issued summons to appear before the JMFC?II court on July 23 in connection with 12 cases.

Appealing the chief minister through the City Police Commissioner through a memorandum, the Bishop said that the chief minister has forced the Bishop, clergy and laity to beg for justice. “As I believed the words of chief minister and home minister, I?have lost face before the people,” the Bishop said urged the police commissioner to take steps towards speedy disposal of pending cases.In his reply, City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that the files were recently forwarded from the Commissioner's office and assured to take steps to do the needful at the earliest.

KPCC Secretary Ivan D'Souza, CODP?Director Fr Onil D'Souza, Sr Assumpta, Sr Michell, Fr Thomas, JD(S) leader Susheel Noronha and many Catholic leaders accompanied the Bishop.

DK records highest single-day spike of 97 covid cases; Udupi records 40

Mangaluru/Udupi, June 28: The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have recorded 97 and 40 fresh coronavirus positive cases in last 24 hours.

With the highest single day spike, the total covid-19 positive cases in Dakshina Kannada mounted to 665, among which 272 cases are now active.

So far 313 people have recovered and discharged from the hospitals. 13 covid-19 patients have passed away. Two among them have died due to non covid reasons.

With the 40 fresh cases, Udupi’s total mounted to 1179, among which only 135 cases are active. 1042 people have recovered and discharged from the hospitals. Two people passed away.

Mangaluru, Jun 29: An elderly woman who was tested positive for coronavirus, breathed her last at the designated covid hospital in the city today.

The deceased was a 60-year-old resident of Ullal.

According to sources, the woman, was getting treated for ailments related to liver and heart.

Meet Shifali Saldanha, Namma Kudla’s new beauty queen

She is one of a few beauty queens who give equal importance to both modelling and academic growth. Within months after completing her MBA in Finance and HR, Shifali Saldanha won Miss India Continent 2019 first runner-up and Miss Glory of International 2019 held in Mumbai.

An alumna of St Aloysius College (AIMIT), this 23-year-old Mangalurean is now a much sought after budding model. “I am enjoying the moment and would like to go with the flow,” says the much-loved daughter of Stephen Saldanha and late Anupama Saldanha.

Over the course of past two years, Ms Saldanha has experienced various nerve-wracking moments. She was shattered when her beloved mother lost battle with cancer and bid adieu to the world a couple of years ago. Yet, she serenely braved all the challenges. Her ‘never give up’ attitude helped her to scale new heights amidst misfortunes and pains.

Speaking to coastaldigest.com about her success in Miss India Continent 2019, which was organised by Dr Mahesh Yadav of Aman Gandhi Film Productions, Ms Saldanha said 15 contestants from different parts of the country were shortlisted for the finale, which had five diverse rounds.

“The meet and greet session was my favourite phase in the competition as it was an opportunity to interact with the participants from different parts of the country,” recalls the multi-talented, who dreams big.

The leggy lass’ success wasn’t accidental one. A trained singer and multilingual anchor, Ms Saldanha was already a known figure in coastal Karnataka. She had won the titles Miss Karnataka International- Multimedia 2018, and Miss Beautiful Eyes Mangaluru 2018.

Being a moderate feminist, who carries a go-getter attitude, Ms Saldanha calls upon every woman to be optimistic, challenging and goal-focused.
