Colourful shadows' gets underway in City

Mangalore, July 29: Shadows of Konkani Culture were brought back to life by life at Orchid art gallery with the art expo 'Colourful Shadows'.

As many as 18 artists displayed 21 paintings each portraying a different perspective. These paintings created as a part of World Konkani Culture are unique in their own style.

However, the fear of losing culture was one unifying thought that seemed to be expressed in most of the paintings.

Gummat, the traditional music instrument used by the Konkani community was expressed creatively by Anil Devadiga with a splash of blue on the white canvas.

Though the gummat player was hidden within the colour, the percussion instrument stood out showing its prominence.

On the other hand, artist Purushotham Adve portrayed an imprisoned gummat player trying to signify the beauty of the culture and also the threat it is facing today.

Santhosh Andrade has gone down the memory lane to portray his house, in turn portraying the architecture of the South and Ganesh Somayaji makes a cathedral look alive in his painting.

Kamal Ahemed has enhanced the flavour of the coast with a painting of a fisherwoman with her basketful of catch and Ramesh Rao has shown the hardworking Konkan woman in a smoke filled kitchen.

Veena Srinivas has the traditional woman performing the Pooja in front of Tulsi depicted in 'Khavi Kala' and Jyothi Sahi is on an attempt to unravel the truth about the complexities of the Universe with her painting 'Cosmic conundrum'.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, artist Sapna Noronha stresses on the importance of painting expos. A group expo shows the viewer different perspectives as well as encourages new artists.

It attempts to draw the attention of the public towards art, she says.

Colourful Shadow is a vibrant expo that reflects the diversity of Konkani Culture in particular and Indian Culture on a broader sense, says Orchid Art Gallery Director William Pais.

Inaugurating the art expo, entrepreneur Roy Castelino appreciated the efforts put by artists in creating the art pieces which carries a message.

Mangaluru, Mar 23: People in Thukkottu and Ullal area of Mangaluru are in panic after a local woman who recently returned from a foreign country fell ill.

On receiving information the health officials from Ullal PHC visited the house of the woman, who is suffering from fever and cold. They provided her medicines and asked her to remain quarantined at home.

It is said that the woman's mother, who had come to a grocery shop near Thokkottu, informed the shopkeeper that her daughter, who had returned from abroad, was suffering from fever.

The alert shopkeeper, understanding the gravity of the situation, informed ZP Standing Committee on Health and Education President Dhanalakshmi Gatti, who in turn brought the issue to the notice of health officials.

The health officials rushed to her house and diagnosed her. However, the authorities have requested the local people not to be panicked as it is not yet confirmed whether the woman is suffering from COVID-19 caused by the novel coronavirus.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: The Karnataka government on Wednesday put on hold a controversial proposal to drop certain chapters, including on Islam, Christianity, Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali, from social science textbooks to reduce the 2020-21 syllabi for students in classes 1-10.

Citing the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruption caused to the academic calendar of the year, the government had earlier dropped the chapter on Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali from the Class 7 social science textbook, saying chapters on Tipu Sultan have been retained in the Class 6 and 10 textbooks.

The move did not go down well with the opposition, which saw certain ulterior motives behind the decision.

Apparently under sharp criticism, the Department of Public Instruction issued a new notification on Wednesday "on the directions of the Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar".

There is a delay in opening the schools during the academic year 2020-21 due to COVID-19 pandemic, said the latest order.

In this context, the order said, chapters were dropped to fit in 120 days of the academic year for classes 1 to 10 and the same was published in the department's website.

"However, on the directions of the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, the decision to drop certain chapters has been put on hold. A review will be done following which the deleted chapters will be uploaded in the website," the order read.

Earlier in the day, Mr Kumar had issued a statement, saying that the decision to truncate the syllabus has not been finalised yet. He also made it clear that his department would not remove chapters unnecessarily.

Former chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah had attacked the government on the issue.

"The government, which has failed to control the spread of coronavirus, is using it as an opportunity to push its clandestine agenda of saffronising the textbooks," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Bellary,  Jul 26: A 100-year-old woman resident of Huvina Hadagali town in Bellary district, Karnataka, recovered from COVID-19 after testing positive for the virus earlier this month.

"Doctors treated me well. Along with regular food, I was eating an apple a day. The doctors are giving me tablets and injection, and I am healthy now. COVID-19 is like a common cold," said Hallamma while speaking to news agency.

The woman's son, daughter-in-law, and grandson had also tested positive for the virus, and the family was treated at their home.

According to health department officials, her son works at a bank and had tested positive on July 3, after which Hallamma tested positive on July 16; the 100-year-old reported negative for the virus on July 22.

Meanwhile, the covid-19 death toll in the country rose to 32,063 with 705 fatalities being recorded in a day on Sunday. The number of tests for detection of covid-19 has crossed the 16-million mark in the country.
