MCC Commissioner proposes alternative place for evicted street vendors

Mangalore, July 30: Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has collected Rs 38.85 crore of property tax after the effective implementation of Self Assessment Scheme in the year 2010-11, said Dr K N Vijayaprakash, the outgoing Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner.

Speaking at a press conference called to thank the media persons for their cooperation during his stint as Commissioner at the office of Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project (KUDCEMP), Mallikatta here on Saturday, he said earlier in the year 2009-10 it was only Rs 9.65 crore. He is expected to take charge as the Chief Executive Officer of DK Zilla Panchayat on Monday.

Mr Vijayaprakash listed out several schemes initiated during his tenure. The integrated service centre Mangalore One has come up at three places in the city, he said.

MCC also opened 'Nagara Mithra' to facilitate the public regarding the information and 'Asha Chavadi' to help the senior citizens and physically challenged people, he said.

He said MCC in collaboration with Self Help Groups (SHG) and 'Sthree Shakthi' will extend the coverage of underground drainage (UGD) network to the entire city.

He said, Gandhi Park which is located at Mannagudda has been developed with all necessary equipments for physically challenged children and a Park at Hat Hill will be reserved exclusively for women.

Alternate place for street vendors

Commissioner said MCC has planned alternate places, beside the Town Hall and Tempo Stand adjacent to it for street vendors who have been targeted by the civic tigers. However, the Mayor is yet to announce this, he said.

Graveyard development

He said MCC is developing Hindu graveyard at Nandigudde, Shakthinagar and Surathkal at the costs of Rs 45 lakh, Rs 35 lakh and Rs 20 lakh respectively.

Kasaragod, Mar 29: The ban imposed by Karnataka in crossing state borders to Mangalore even for medical emergencies had cost a life here late on Friday.

According to sources, the ambulance carrying a 70-year-old woman for critical care treatment to Mangalore was blocked at Thalapadi border on Kasaragod-Mangalore National Highway on Friday evening.

A pregnant lady had to deliver in an ambulance recently as the police denied permission to cross over to Mangalore.

Mysuru, Feb 6: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Thursday said that he would consult experts in Ayurveda and other streams over coronavirus issue.

Speaking to the media here, he said that ''So far no positive case has been reported in the state''.

''However, the Health department officials have taken all precautionary measures to check the epidemic'', he further said.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi cautioned private bus transport services operators, taxis and autorickshaws from exploiting commuters in wake of bus and train services being suspended by the government as precautionary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In a statement released here on Monday, Transport Minister Savadi said it has come to the notice that private buses, taxis and autorickshaws were misusing the opportunity and exploiting commuters. Inter-district bus services have been suspended in the districts wherein lockdown has been announced to protect the health of people and none should violate the decision of the government, he stated.

Transport and Police Department officials have been asked to taken action against those violating norms and exploiting commuters. Service providers for their profit cannot risk with the health of the people and repeated cases if come to the fore, they will not be spared, Savadi cautioned.

Government has taken measures to prevent spread of COVID-19. Private transport service providers and people should join hands and cooperate to contain it, he appealed.
