Aati Amavasya tragedy: Family still in shock

Vittla, August 1: An uneasy and taut silence prevailed over the house. People inside are still in shock. Fury of fate has taken away one of their beloved. 29 year old enthusiastic advocate Ashwin Kumar had unknowingly barked up the wrong tree.

There exists an age old tradition practised in parts of South India on the auspicious day of Aati Amavasya to intake a sap of the Devil's Tree (Alstonia scholaris) which is reputed to have high medicinal and antibiotic properties. That was what the deceased Ashwin Kumar, a young lawyer by profession was hoping for when he chipped off the seemingly similar but toxic Kaasaraka tree (Nux vomica) on last Saturday, July 30.

Ashwin collected the bark early in the morning and his mother Dakshayini (65) prepared the concoction, which was certainly not the first time for her.

Dakshayini along with her two sons Ashwin, and Brijesh (35) and a day labourer Kaashinath (70), a resident of Bijapur drank the decoction. Ashwin enthusiastically drank more than the others.

Luckily, her other son Ravishankar, Brijesh's wife and children did not drink it.

Dakshayini was immediately affected, started vomiting and lost consciousness. Ashwin and Brijesh took her to the Vitla Government Hospital where both of them lost consciousness. Immediately they were taken to Kasturba Medical Centre (KMC), Mangalore. Meanwhile, Kaashinath was also affected and was taken to KMC in another vehicle.

Ashwin breathed his last, without responding to the efforts of the doctors at night. Dakshayini, Brijesh and Kaashinath are now recovering in the hospital.

Confusion

Kaashinath was unaware of the happenings and complained to the doctors in the hospital that the people of the house tried to kill him. But, reality bit him hard, said Chennappa Poojari, Ashwin's uncle.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, on completion of one year of his government, today said coronavirus hampered his development plans for the state.

He said the state will not see a lockdown again "at any cost".

"Due to coronavirus we couldn't meet people's expectations but now we'll not have lockdown in Karnataka at any cost. In future we're going to fulfill whatever I announced in Budget. If necessary we'll take loans and complete all development work," said Yediyurappa.

"Covid has hampered development plans of Karnataka, lot more needs to be done, i'm committed to providing an able, stable government," he said.

Arrangements were made for virtual celebrations to mark the one-year anniversary of Yediyurappa government at Banquet Hall in Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. Social distancing was maintained at the event.

A record 5,199 new COVID-19 cases and 82 deaths were reported from Karnataka on Sunday, the state's health department said.

With this, the total number of coronavirus cases in the state stands at 96,141, including 58,417 active cases and 35,838 recoveries.

So far, 1,878 deaths have been reported from Karnataka. Karnataka is the only state to have over 50,000 active cases with overall tally below 1 lakh.

Bengaluru, July 13: The Karnataka government today announced the cancellation of I PUC supplementary examinations across the state. 

Primary and Secondary Education minister S Suresh Kumar announced that the government took the decision in the wake of rising cases of Covid-19 and re-introduction of the lockdown. According to sources in the education department, as many as 60,000 students were supposed to appear for the examination.

Previously, the state government had decided to hold these exams at the college level in every district and publish the results by 30 July. However, the government has withdrawn even that arrangement and completely cancelled the exams. 

According to the minister, all the students who failed in the I PUC examination, shall also be promoted to II PUC. "The students who have attended all the subjects but unable to pass the exams will also be promoted to the next class," Suresh Kumar said.

However, those who missed out on the exams due to health reasons or failed in the examinations will be given a small test at the time of commencing classes for II PUC to assess their learning ability at the college level, according to the minister. "Only those students who missed out on the examination due to shortage of attendance will not be promoted to the next class," Suresh Kumar clarified.

Mangaluru, Feb 2: A local court on Saturday remanded Aditya Rao,the suspect in the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) bomb case, to two weeks judicial custody.

Rao was produced before the Sixth Judicial First Class Magistrate Court after the 10-day police custody expired.

Rao has been in police custody since January 22 after he surrendered before the police in Bengaluru on January 21 and was later brought here.

He had allegedly planted an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at the airport on January 20 triggering panic and later made a hoax call to the airport terminal that a bomb had been planted in an IndiGo flight.

During the last ten days, police took the accused to several places in the city and Udupi where he had frequented in the recent past.

He was also taken to the room where he stayed while he was working at a hotel in the city.
