Rain throws life out of gear; houses damaged; paddy fields destroyed

Mangalore, August 2: Heavy rains which started lashing Dakshina Kannada since Monday evening continued on Tuesday too, inundating low-lying areas and throwing life out of gear.

Strong winds damaged houses and destroyed agricultural fields in many parts of the district.

A portion of the house belonging to one Pramod at Kandak area of Mangalore city collapsed in the wee hours of Tuesday, causing damage to the tune of Rs 50,000.

The skies remained cloudy entire day. The downpour led to water logging in many localities, causing hardship to many families.

Many two-wheelers and even four-wheelers had to wait for long time as the streets were flooded with rainwater.

The Dakshina Kannada district recorded an average of 82.5 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8am on Tuesday. While Bantwal taluk recorded the highest rainfall of 78.0 mm, Puttur taluk recorded the least at 27.0.6 mm. Rainfall recorded in Mangalore, Sullia and Belthangady taluks respectively was 57.2 mm, 45.4 mm and 69.0 mm.

Meanwhile, Director-in-charge of Meteorological Centre, Bangalore warned the fishermen that strong onshore winds from westerly to northwesterly direction speed occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph likely along off karnataka coast during next 24 hours.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: Jnandev Kamath, former President of erstwhile Mangalore Stock Exchange Limited died late last night in a private hospital in the city.

He was 65 and is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Jnandev Kamath was an alumnus of SDM College of Law and Business Management. 

He was one the founding members of Mangalore Stock Exchange Limited. He was an avid sportsman, an accomplished cricketer, a champion rallyist and golf coach. 

He often played for Pentlandpet Sports Association (PPSA) in his younger days.

Mangaluru, May 4: An engineering student has claimed to have received 600 threat calls in the past few days from unidentified people for starting fish business during the lockdown in Kavoor. 

According to Sakshath Shetty, resident of Kavoor, he started receiving threat calls from various people after he started selling fish during the lockdown. 

Police said they have been able to identify some of the numbers from where the threat calls were made and investigation is under way.

Bengaluru, June 14: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa-led BJP government of Karnataka has once again urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union BJP government to release GST compensation worth Rs 10,208 crore that is due for the state.

The request was placed with Finance Minister Niramala Sitharaman during the 40th GST council meeting, in which Karnataka Home Minister and state’s representative to the council, Basavaraj Bommai, participated.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Bommai said that Rs 10,208 crore was due from the Centre as GST compensation for four four months - from March to May.

“We have requested the Centre to release Rs 1,460 crore - pertaining to GST compensation for the month of March - as soon as possible due to the dire financial conditions of the state,” he said.

Bommai said that the state was confident that the funds will be released soon, noting that Karnataka had recently received Rs 4,314 in GST compensation for three months, between December 2019 to February 2020.

Meanwhile, the state also proposed the Council to reduce penalty for delay in filing GST. Bommai said that while people are made to pay 18% of the tax as fine in delay in payment, Karnataka has asked the Centre to reduce the percentage by half to 9%.
