Officials raid 100 shops, seize 800 kg of banned plastic bags

Mangalore, August 4: Officials of Mangalore City Corporation and Karnataka State Pollution control Board raided many shops in the city on Wednesday and seized thin plastic carry bags weighing about 800 kg, according to a senior official in MCC.

The official said that about 100 shops were raided in parts of the city including Kadri, Central Market, Bunder, KS Rao Road and City Bust Stand areas. Plastic bags having less than 40 microns of thickness were seized.

He informed that five wholesale plastic traders were fined Rs 750 each. About 13 flower traders were found selling flower in banned plastic bags.

In Kadri some eateries were found packing food items in thin plastic bags. All of them were warned.

The officials learnt during the raid that some persons who came on two-wheelers sold thin plastic bags to traders. The officials are yet to identify those persons.

Karnataka reports 4,764 new COVID-19 cases, 55 deaths in last 24 hours

Bengaluru, Jul 22: A total of 4,764 new COVID-19 cases and 55 deaths were reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours.

Out of the new cases, 2,050 cases were reported in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

The total number of active cases stands at 47,069, said the state Health Department.

Death toll rises to 1,519 in the state.

Corona scare: BMTC issues guidelines to employees as per WHO advisory

Bengaluru, Mar 3: Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) on Tuesday issued guidelines to its employees, as per advisory issued by World Health Organisation (WHO), to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

"The BMTC has provided general information on the topic and SOPs for daily life and operations to our employees as per advisory issued by the WHO. The corporation has started a communication campaign about Coronavirus indicating its characteristics, known ways of infection and recommended preventive measures. This information was distributed to the staff, drivers and conductors through Whatsapp, pamphlet and email," informed BMTC.

"The information was also distributed through pamphlets at bus stations. An awareness campaign is being taken up by sharing relevant information through social media," it added.

The BMTC further said that the circular was issued to create awareness among the cleaning personnel who work in depots.

Mangaluru to get 15 smart CCTV cameras in sensitive places

Mangaluru, Jan 5: To keep an hawk's eye on the city, 15 prominent and crowded junctions in the city will have the most advanced CCTV cameras installed under the Smartcity project.

The junctions are-- Bejai KSRTC, Pumpwell, Vamanjoor, Padil, Mullikatte, Bejai, Bendoor, Falnir, Morgans Gate, Kulashekara-Shakthinagar Cross, Kottara Chowki, Kuntikan, Rao & Rao Circle, Padavinangady and Kavoor junctions.

According to top police officials, these junctions will receive approximately 75 cameras to check crime and aid in solving the cases of murder and robbery in the city.

A ‘smartpole’ will be installed there with each pole containing about five cameras along with a 360 degree swivelling camera.
