Heavy rains continue to lash twin districts

Mangalore, August 4: Heavy rains which started lashing Dakshina Kannada and Udupi since last Monday evening continued on Thursday morning too, inundating low-lying areas and throwing life out of gear.

Strong winds continued to damaged houses and destroy agricultural fields in many parts of the twin districts.

A house which was under construction collapsed and damaged the neighbouring house at Marakada on Tuesday night. The collapsed house belonged to Dayanand. However, his neighbour Adbul's house too was damaged as Dayanand's house walls collapsed. As a result, the wall of the house has been partially damaged.

In the last 24 hours, Dakshina Kannada district has received 69.7 mm rain. This include—Sullia—81 mm, Puttur—72 mm, Belthangady—71.8 mm, Mangalore—65.8 mm and Bantwal—57.8 mm.

The sea erosion has been intenisfied on the shores at Yermal in Padubidri. If the sea erosion continues, then the fishries road and electric poles will be damaged. Several coconut trees have been uprooted following intense sea erosion in the region. The fisheries road at Yermal Thenka is likely to be washed away.

The matereological department has warned that heavy to very heavy rains would occur in few places over coastal Karnataka in the next 48 hours. The fishermen have been asked not to venture into sea for fishing.

Udupi district recorded a rainfall of 78.4 mm in the last 24 hours. Udupi recorded 80.2 mm, Kundapur recorded 97.4 mm and Karkala registered 57.6 mm rainfall on Wednesday. Damages have been reported from Kundapur taluk as well. A house belonging to Shekhar Kala of Nellikatte at Kawradi village was partially damaged due to heavy rains. The house of Rajeevi Heggadathi of Molahalli village was partially damaged when a coconut tree fell on it.

In Udupi taluk, the house of one Gulabhi Bhandarthi of Mudabettu of Kodavur village collapsed owing to heavy rain. The walls of the house of one Margaret Almeida in Puttur village collapsed due to rain. The house of Ramananda Aithal in Manur village was also partially damaged.

Bengaluru, Jul 24: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner on Thursday issued a public apology after "local staff" sealed the doors of two apartments with metal sheets in a building where a positive case of COVID-19 was reported in Dommalur.

Earlier on Thursday, BBMP sealed doors of two flats near Dommalur, in a building wherein a COVID-19 case was reported. A woman with two children, along with an elderly couple stayed in those flats. After the woman tweeted about the incident, BBMP officials removed steel sheets from doors.

Taking the matter into consideration, BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad, took to Twitter to express an apology for "over-enthusiasm" of his officials.

He tweeted, "We are committed to address any issues that result in stigma. Apologies for the over enthusiasm of the local staff."

He also said the BBMP is committed to treating all citizens with dignity. "I have ensured removing of these barricades immediately. We are committed to treat all persons with dignity.

The purpose of containment is to protect the infected and to ensure uninfected are safe," he tweeted.

Mangaluru, Mar 1: Karnataka Minister for Major and Medium Industries Jagadish Shettar said that the flight service between Mangaluru and Hubballi will begin on March 29 under UDAN scheme.

Speaking to reporters on the sideline of the meeting of Industries Commerce of Magaluru, here on Saturday evening, he said while the city of Ports is the second busiest international airport after Bengaluru in Karnataka, other places, namely Hubballi, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Bidar, have come on the air map with the UDAN scheme.

Stating that UDAN launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was what the Golden Quadrilateral highway project of former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee had envisaged, Mr. Shettar noted that more flights are operating to and from Mangaluru now. This has paved the way for Industrialisation of the important city on the Bombay-Karnataka region, he added.
