Vivek Express' arrives in city to a rousing reception

Mangalore, August 5: Mobile museum 'Vivek Express' depicting the life of Swami Vivekananda arrived at the Central Railway Station here on Friday. It is an initiative by the Indian Railways to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The train with two air conditioned coaches, exhibits pictures and write-ups on the life and message of Swami Vivekananda.

Inaugurating the exhibition, Palakkad Divisional Railway Manager S K Raina, described Swami Vivekananda as the person instrumental in propagating Indian philosophy all across the globe. “Children should learn from the accomplishments this greatest spiritual leader of the modern world” he said.

'Vivek Express' was flagged of by Mamatha Banerjee, former railway Minister at Howrah Railway Station on January 12, 2011 and expected visit 240 railway stations across the country.

Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy speaking on the occasion said that Indians should be inspired by Swami Vivekananda and his life.

“India is the youngest country in the world with the average age of its inhabitants being 29. Young citizens of the country should strive to realize the dream of overall development of our country”, he said.

Expressing pleasure after witnessing the rare exhibition, Head of Ramakrishna Mutt in Mangalore Swami Jitakamanandaji exhorted the students to seize the opportunity to learn from the life of Vivekananda.

Inspector General of Police (Western Region) Alok Mohan, General Secretary of 'Vivek Express' Welcoming Committee K C Nayak, RSS leader Prabhakar Bhat Kalladka were present among others.

A picture exhibition depicting Swami Vivekananda is also organised at the Railway Station by Ramakrishna Mutt, Mangalore.

'Vivek Express' will remain in city till August 8. Exhibition will be open for the public and students alike between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Bengaluru, Jun 25: Former Karnataka chief minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday claimed that there are shortage of beds and ventilators to treat COVID-19 patients in the state.

In a series of tweets, he targetted the Karnataka government on COVID-19 management.

"The state government has failed to provide adequate treatment to those infected with corona. There are no beds and no ventilators to treat more than four thousand patients. Self-induced lockdown is the only solution," he tweeted.

In his subsequent tweet, he said, "Residents of the state, including Bangalore, now have only one way to escape from COVID-19. Stay at home and celebrate yourself as a self-proclaimed lockdown. Money is not more important than life. Your life is in your hands now."

In another tweet, former Chief Minister alleged that the government has fixed Rs 10-15,000 per day for COVID-19 treatment in private hospitals.

"The state government is also saying this indirectly. The 'home remedy' in the home is to stay at home and be safe. The government has fixed Rs 10-15,000 per day for the treatment of this infection in private hospitals. How poor can afford it while upper class can't afford," he tweeted.

"If four members of a family infected with corona, the cost of treatment for a 15-day treatment at a private hospital is Rs 5-6 lakh. Where do the poor bring that Much money? We must save our lives while the government is sitting incapable. This is my concern for the people of the state," he said in another tweet.

In a video message that HD Kumaraswamy demanded the state government to give all kinds of safety and security to the students who are writing the SSLC exam tomorrow.
HD Kumaraswamy also urged students to be careful.

About 8,48,203 students will appear in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination tomorrow, said Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Wednesday.

Bengaluru, Jun 25: A total of 442 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Karnataka on Thursday taking the total count of cases in the state to 10,560.

According to the State Health Department, there are 3,716 active cases and 6,670 patients have been discharged after treatment. Six more deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 170.

India's COVID-19 count reached 4,73,105 on Thursday with the highest single-day spike of 16,922 cases in the last 24 hours.

Mangaluru, Jul 31: Muslims across coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada today observed Eid al Adha following the safety guidelines issued by the government amidst covid-19 pandemic. 

While coastal Karnataka is celebrating the festival of sacrifice today, it will be observed in other parts of Karnataka and country tomorrow. 

Congregational Eid prayers were held in many mosques while ensuring physical distancing norms. Only 50 devotees were allowed in mosques. Children below 10 years of age and elders above 60 years of age weren’t allowed. 

Eidgahs in the region wore a deserted look as the government has temporarily prohibited prayers in the open grounds. The Eidgah at Lighthouse Hill in Mangaluru, which usually witnessed huge crowd during Eid celebrations, was also closed this time. 

As expected, the celebration this time was a low key thanks to the restrictions placed in tune with the threat of coronavirus infection.

Prayers were held in Kudroli’s Nadupalli and Bundar’s Zeenat Bakhsh Central mosque. All those who entered mosque were wearing masks. 

In Udupi city, Eid prayers were held at Jamia Masjid and other mosques with limited number of devotees. In Bhatkal took some of the mosques hosted Eid prayers with all precautionary measures.
