River Kumaradhara overflows as rains continue

Mangalore, August 6: As the rains continued to lash Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Friday, the river Kumaradhara overflowed in Subrahmanya.

The bathing ghat in Kumaradhra in Subrahmanya was inundated, causing severe inconvenince to the devotees. The water was seen flowing on Subrahmanya road, thus disrupting the movement of vehicles and padestrians as well. Cholugulu jodi bridge on Harihara-Kollamogra road was also submerged thus disrupting the movement of vehicles.

Flood water also overflowed on Uppinangady-Subrahmanya road at Nettana. If rain continues to lash with the same pace, then the bridge across Kaikamba hole too is likely to be submerged.

A house belonging to Manjaiah Shetty has been completely damaged at Talapady. The cowshed belonging to Dechamma has been partially damaged in Kilpady in Mulki. The kutcha house belonging to Geetha Nayak has been totally damaged at Bajal. A house belonging to Koragappa Madivala was damaged at Kolnadu.

However, none sustained injuries. A hillock caved in at Attavar and a tree was uprooted at Kodailbail disrupting the movement of vehicles for some time.

In the last 24 hours, the district received an average of 56.6 mm with Sullia receiving highest of 74.2 mm rains followed by Puttur—74 mm, Mangalore —57.6 mm, Belthangady—40.8 mm and Bantwal—36.4 mm.

Warning

The matereological department has warned that heavy to very heavy rain would occur at isolated places over coastal Karnataka when rainfall shall exceed 65 mm in the next 48 hours.

The fishermen have been asked not to venture into sea during the next 24 hours.

Udupi

Heavy rains which lashed the district for the last few days receded in Udupi on Friday. The wall of a house belonging to Seetha Bai of Irodi village collapsed.

No damages have been reported from any parts of Karkala and Kundapur taluks.

In the last 24 hours, Udupi district has received an average of 29.3 mm rain. This includes Karkala—38.4 mm, Kundapura—31.4 mm and Udupi—18.2 mm.

Minimise restrictions where there are no cases: Committee suggests CM

Bengaluru, Apr 9: A special task force--set up by the government of Karnataka--submitted a report to the Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa, putting forward recommendations suggesting minimisation of restrictions in districts where there is nil or minimum cases, here on Wednesday.

The committee said: "COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients should be segregated and online health services should be encouraged. Restrictions should be minimised in districts where there is nil or minimum cases of COVID-19 and lockdown should be continued in hotspot areas with quarantine measures strictly being implemented."

With regards to the testing of likely patient, the committee informed that rapid test kits would help to quarantine more likely patient. "The rapid test kits will arrive in April 12. These kits will boost our facility and would help us in quarantining the more people."

On the subject of lifting transportation ban, the committee suggested that the transport of goods and services must continue but with regards to passenger carriers, they are suspended till April 30.

"Goods and Transportation should be allowed, but passenger carriers should be banned until further orders. No buses, trains nor flights will be plying till April 30. No metro trains and auto-rickshaws should be allowed and an odd-even system transport system should be implemented," the committee added.

The committee also suggested that all industries, IT, BT and Garments should be made to work on 50 per cent strength. Garments workers should be allowed to stitch PPEs, which are in more demand. And for construction workers, the committee suggested that they should be allowed to work at sites at 50 per cent strength.

They suggested that educational institutions remain closed till May 30 and online classes must be encouraged.

Dr. Devi Shetty heads the Taskforce and Dr. C. N. Majunath, Dr. Nagaraj, Dr. Ravi and Sudharshan were also the part of the committee.

According to the Ministry of health and family welfare, 181 cases have been reported in the state so far. A total of 5,734 positive cases have been reported of which, 166 are dead and 473 are cured/discharged and migrated.

Congress expert in dividing parties, purchasing MLAs: Kumaraswamy over BSP row

Bengaluru, Jul 29: A day after Congress staged a nationwide 'Save Democracy' protest, Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy slammed Congress for "dividing" the political parties and "buying MLAs" and questioned their "democratic behaviour" to lure Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLAs who supported them.

Kumaraswamy, in a media statement, said, "Is it a democratic behaviour to lure MLAs of other parties through political shenanigans and later merging with them?"

"Congress is an expert in dividing political parties and purchase of MLAs," said Kumaraswamy adding, "If you are dividing the like-minded party MLAs through deceit, who would support you?"

He alleged that the term "horse trade" in politics came to be used because of Congress.

Congress had tied to divide the Janata Dal (Secular) in 2004. To this, he added, "To avoid the party being hijacked by the Congress, I had to oust the Congress-JD(S) coalition government through a political coup."

Kumaraswamy further accused, "Haven't the Congress who is making a big noise about the purchase of MLAs divided the JD(S) in the past? Is it not a fact that for the sake of one Rajya Sabha seat, the Congress government in Karnataka purchased eight JD(S) MLAs?"

Both -- Congress and BJP -- are "criminals" in purchase matter, he added.

Rajasthan Congress is in turmoil after simmering differences between Sachin Pilot and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot came out in the open. Pilot was removed as the Deputy Chief Minister and the state unit chief of Congress.

The Congress has accused the BJP of indulging in horse-trading to bring down the Gehlot government. The BJP has rejected the allegations.

Karnataka's Davanagere district reports 21 COVID-19 positive cases

Davanagere, May 3: Karnataka's Davanagere district on Sunday reported 21 COVID-19 positive cases, said Mahantesh Beelagi, Deputy Commissioner.

The number of COVID-19 patients has suddenly taken a giant leap in the district.

"We had sent 94 samples on May 1, on May 2 we sent 72 samples. Today we sent 164 samples for testing. In the last two days, 21 samples have tested positive for coronavirus, we are tracing to know how did all of them came in contact with COVID-19 infected person," said Mahantesh Beelagi.

"Our surveillance team and police team have started tracing the primary and secondary contacts of all 21 people," he added.
Davanagere is currently in the Green Zone.

Meanwhile, 13 new COVID-19 positive cases were reported in Karnataka till 5 pm on Sunday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 614, according to the State Health Department.
