Cattle trader maimed in 'shootout' dies at hospital

Mangalore, August 6: A Padubidri based cattle trader, who was critically injured after being shot in the head, chest and abdomen in the wee hours of Saturday in Mudigere taluk of Chikmagalur district, died at a private hospital in the city.

The deceased is Kalandar (30), a resident of Kanchinadka near Padubidri. He had been admitted to Intensive Care Unit at the hospital in the morning.

Hospital sources said that the injured did not respond to any treatment and breathed his last in the evening. Doctors found nine pellets in his body. The dead body was handed over to the family members after completing formalities in the presence of police officers.

Chikmagalur Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar based on a complaint said that Kalandar was among a group of suspected thieves who had come in a vehicle, allegedly for stealing cattle from the farm house of one Nagesh Gowda in Jenubailu near Gonibeedu village in Mudigere Taluk around 3:00 am.

Mr Gowda, who lodged a complaint at Goonibeedu police station, said that he woke up hearing the sounds of dogs barking around 3:00 am, and peeped out of the window of the farm house, to witness the alleged thieves trying to steal his cattle in the dark using a white vehicle, most probably a Tata Somo.

“To protect the cattle from thieves I fired seven or eight pellets from my licensed barrel bridge loader gun. Within a few seconds the thieves fled away,” the complainant said.

Mr Vikas said that only one person among the gang was injured in the incident and before admitting at a hospital in Mangalore, he had taken treatment at Government Hospital in Belthangdy “under the guise of an accident victim”

Relatives' Version of Story

Relatives of Kalander in Padubidri said that they received a telephone call from an unknown number around 4:50 am, when they just had finished Sahri, the pre-dawn meal, saying that Kalandar was shot at by assailants and he is in critical condition.

“It seems that the some miscreants might have fired at him through a country made gun at around 3:30 am. On sighting a heavily bleeding man lying unconscious on the ground at Mudigere Hand-Post, local people informed the local police,” said one of the relatives of Kalandar.

“As desired by the family members, the injured was initially taken to Belthangady Government Hospital for emergency treatment through an 108 vehicle. Doctors there suggested to shift the injured to a hospital in Mangalore, as his condition was critical,” he said.

“Khalander had left for Mudigere on Friday evening”, he informed.

Kalander is the eldest son among two children of Late Abdul Khadir and Nafeesa couple. His brother Thoufeeq works in a gulf country.

Bengaluru, Aug 2: A total of 5,532 new cases of COVID-19 and 84 deaths were reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, the state's health department informed on Sunday.

With this, the Karnataka's COVID-19 tally now stands at 1,34,819 positive cases, including 74,590 active cases and 57,725 discharges.
So far, 2,496 deaths have been reported from the state.

India's COVID-19 count on Sunday crossed the 17 lakh-mark with 54,736 positive cases and 853 deaths reported in the country.

"The total COVID-19 cases stand at 17,50,724 including 5,67,730 active cases, 11,45,630 cured/discharged/migrated and 37,364 deaths," said the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

Manipal, Mar 12: Team WGSHA is proud to announce that the culinary museum in WGSHA has been listed in Limca Book of Records as India's First Living Culinary Arts Museum.

Limca Book of Records (LBR) is a catalogue of achievements made by Indians, at home and abroad in diverse fields of human endeavour. LBR is a celebration of exemplary exploits and recognizes accomplishments such as firsts, inventions, discoveries, honours, awards and the truly extraordinary.

Chef Thirugnanasambantham, Principal of WGSHA, while thanking MAHE and ITC Leadership for extending all support towards instituting this museum in Manipal and WGSHA, also appreciated and thanked all those who have directly or indirectly helped towards setting up this museum in Manipal.

"The process for WGSHA's culinary museum to make an entry into the popular Limca Book of Records started almost six months back and after validation by LBR recently, has been listed in the book of records. We are glad that we could be the first of its kind in such endeavour and we also hope to be in Guinness World Records soon", said Chef Thiru.

"We are indeed grateful to Michelin-starred Indian celebrity Chef Vikas Khanna, the founder and curator of this museum, who had this idea of establishing a culinary museum and donated thousands of kitchen tools and equipment worth millions of dollars to this museum for preserving the history of India's rich tradition of culinary arts and to educate the future generations. Chef Vikas Khanna, 'Distinguished Alumnus' of WGSHA, being very desirous of making such a museum in India, what better place it would be than in his own Alma Mater!", he said on the background of having the museum.

Chef Thiru mentioned that Udupi, popular for the famous 'Udupi Cuisine', and being a temple town, is adjacent to International University Town of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE).

MAHE is home to thousands of international students and visitors. With a great heritage of Udupi, combined with the large number of Indian and International students residing in and around Manipal, it was very apt for the college to create a museum for today's Indian youth and the International visitors to understand the rich culinary heritage of India, through the priceless kitchen tools and equipment donated by Chef Vikas Khanna.

"Has placed WGSHA in the global culinary map and we are proud to have joined all such efforts to preserve the history of cuisines and cultures across the world", said Chef Thiru.

The culinary art academic block housing the museum was opened in April 2018, spread approximately over 25,000 sq ft and is shaped in the form of a giant pot very similar to the ones found in Harappa.

There are historical as well as regular household items such as plates made by the Portuguese in India, a 100-year-old ladle used to dole out food at temples and bowls dating to the Harappan era, an old seed sprinkler, an ancient Kashmiri tea brewer known as 'samovar', vessels from the Konkan, Udupi and Chettinad regions, apart from a large collection of rolling pins, utensils of all shapes and sizes, tea strainers of different types etc.

Bengaluru, Apr 30: The Karnataka government on Thursday decided to allow migrant workers, tourists, students and others stranded in different parts of the state due to the ongoing lockdown to return to their native places, a day after the Centre issued guidelines for the process.

This will be a one-time movement and the government would arrange buses for those in need but they should bear the expenses, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy said. He also said people willing to return to the state would have to undergo tests for COVID-19. The decision was taken at the state cabinet meet and it might come into effect from Friday as the Chief Secretary will have to issue an official order, he said.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken decision on movement of people and the Centre had issued a circular in this regard. Following this we have decided to permit interstate and inter-district movement," he told reporters here.

Travel expenses should be borne by those willing to return and if they want the government can provide buses from the state transport corporations. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday issued orders allowing migrant workers, tourists, students and other people stranded in different parts of the country to move to their respective destinations with certain conditions, giving a big relief to the distressed people. Decision on opening of salons and liquor shops will be taken after May 3, he said.

Madhuswamy said permission would be given for one-time movement of labourers and others who want to go from one district to other for work or any other purpose. Those operating industry or establishment and want to move from place to place for management purpose will be given passes with strict scrutiny and through checks.

Responding to a question, the minister said, "we don't know yet how many are willing to go, where they will go, if some one asks for permission, we will permit." "One family or two or three people want to go, they can use taxi. If too many people want to go, we will provide facility through transport corporation buses," he said.
