Inter-district chess tournament held

Mangalore, August 8: The Mangalore Chess Academy in association with Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan under the auspices of South Kanara district Chess Association has conducted Inter district Chess Tournament on Sunday, August 7 at Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan Pandeshwara here.

The Tournament attracted 74 players from South Kanara and Udupi district, out of which 14 players were Fide rated.

Prizes were distributed in Open & Age category.

Sharan Rao scored 6.5 points out of 7 rounds and won the open category event. Vivek Raj and Aditya Pai won the 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively.

Pavan Bhat and Vradhika Shetty won the U-15 Boys and Girls championship respectively.

Abhishek Bhat and Swathi Bhat won the U-12 Boys and Girls championship whereas Mihir and Vidish V Bhat won the U-9 Boys and Girls championship.

Uprooted tree blocks NH 73 between Mangaluru and Chikamagaluru

Mangaluru, Jul 9: The National Highway 73 between Mangaluru and Chikmagalur was blocked after a huge tree was uprooted and fell on the road near Somanthadka near Belthangady on Thursday due to heavy rain which has been lashing the region since last three days.

The monsoon rain has shifted from the coastal belt to the hilly region of the Western Ghats leading to closure of major roads after a tree was uprooted.

Karkala BJP MLA Sunil Kumar, who was traveling to Bengaluru had to wait for a long time for the traffic to clear.

Meanwhile Chikkamagaluru Deputy Commissioner Dr Bagadi Gautam imposed ban on movement of vehicles on Charmadi ghat from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

‘Apologize or face defamation suit’: Karnataka BJP sends legal notice to DKS, Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, July 31: Denying irregularities in covid-19 equipment purchase by the Karnataka government, the state unit of the BJP has issued legal notices to Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar demanding that they apologize or face a defamation suit.

The notices seek a public apology for the allegations levelled against the government on irregularities in the procurement of Covid-19 equipment and supplies.

Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress president, have been doggedly pursuing allegations of corruption against the BJP government and have demanded a judicial inquiry.

BJP general secretary N Ravi Kumar said that while the Congress leaders claimed that Rs 4,157 crore was spent during Covid-19, they also allege that the government has not responded to any of the 20 letters written by them. "If the government has not provided any answer to the Opposition, where did they get the figures from," he said.

None of the allegations of corruption is specific and the statements made are factually incorrect. "These statements, without any basis, have been issued calculatedly to lower the image and damage the reputation of the government, the Bharatiya Janata Party, representatives of the party and the ministers in the government," the notice issued on behalf of Ravi Kumar read.

As Karnataka’s tally crosses 1.12 lakh, Nalin Kateel praises BSY govt’s role in tackling covid

Mandya, July 30: BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday said Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has done a commendable job in tackling the Covid-19 situation and floods and that the question of changing the leadership does not arise.

Karnataka on Wednesday reported 5,503 new cases of Covid-19 and 92 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 1,12,504 and the death toll to 2,147.

Speaking to reporters here, Kateel said, "Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi has gone to Delhi to discuss the projects sanctioned to state with the central minister. There is no need to read too much into it."

Replying to a query on graft charges against the BSY government by the Congress, Kateel said, "Congress national president, state unit president are out on bail in graft cases . Why did a Congress leader who calls himself a bande (rock) has approached court seeking stay on CBI probe? Before making any allegations against the government, they should think about 'irregularities' in Indira Canteen and housing schemes," he charged.

Instead of instilling confidence and hope among the people in these testing times, the Congress is unnecessarily creating fear with petty politics, he told reporters in Shravanabelagola, Hassan district.

"The Yediyurappa-led BJP government is working day and night to tackle the Covid-19. Similarly, several non-governmental organisations have joined hands with the government in the fight against the virus. But, the Congress is only creating confusion by issuing baseless statements," Kateel said.
