Mangalore, August 9: Expressing anger over pointing fingers at his son in a recently reported college girl's drug addiction and attempted elopement case, former Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation K Ashraf alleged that certain Congress leaders in the region have been trying to tarnish his image using this issue.

He said that there was no truth in the allegation that his son Arif was responsible for the drug addiction of a Pre University Student of St Aloysius College, whose parents recently had thwarted her plan to flee to Mumbai.

“I had come to know that my son had developed close friendship with a girl. Once she had given a call to my son's mobile, when I was at home in the night. I myself had picked the call and requested her to leave his friendship and explained the social situation of this area. When she brushed aside my advice and refused to reveal her father's name I had warned her of filing a complaint with police. A few minutes later her father himself had called back and I had requested him to give some good advice to his daughter,” recalled Mr Ashraf.

The former Mayor said that he has got his son admitted at a College in Mumbai in last June and he is staying at a relative's home there. “Later, whenever that girl involved in some misdeeds, her father started to visit our house and quarrel with me. However, I advised him to keep his daughter in his control. It can be recalled that the same girl had been caught red handed when she was along with two other girl students in Manipal. A few days ago when all those three girls escaped from their houses, again her father came to my house and asked my son's mobile number. At that time I recorded the conversation between him and me and I have provided it to the police as a proof” he said.

It can be mentioned that the teenage girl, who is a resident of Bajal and student first year PUC, was caught red handed at Kankanady Railway Station by her parents while she was waiting for train. It was confirmed that she had booked a Mumbai ticket. The parents succeeded in convincing their daughter to return home and kept her literally under house arrest.

The girl who began experiencing withdrawal symptoms became a nervous wreck forcing her parents to admit her to a hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile members of Sri Ram Sene and Bajrang Dal demanded the Mangalore City Police to take action against former Mayors son accusing him of luring the girl into drug addiction. The also urged the police to take appropriate measures to destroy the drug lobby targeting young minds in college campuses.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) D Dharmayya has said that they have information about the drug lobby and investigation is on.
