Mangalore, August 27: Reaching out to the most deserved and poorer sections among the community effectively and methodically is Hidaya Foundation's approach towards tackling the issue of poverty. Hidaya foundation, a mangalore based organization has been sincerely engaged in a constructive way in addressing the problem of poverty among Muslim for quite some time now. And it has now ambitious plans to address the issue in a big way.

Data collection

The Foundation distributed 'Ramadan Kit' to 850 most deserving families across Dakshina Kannada district beginning of this Ramadan. Prior to this, various teams of the foundation went across the district to find out the deserving families who could be covered under scheme. During the process, the teams not only identified the deserving families, but also collected data of socio- economic- educational scenario of this section of the community. Kasim Ahmed, on behalf of the organization, says that they had embarked upon the mammoth data collection project not just to help out these people in Ramadan, but to plan a complete poverty alleviation and rehabilitation programme throughout the year for this section of Muslim community.

In fact, the teams have horrifying story to tell about the miserable living condition of these people. Many families live in thatched or mud houses and it is unimaginable for most of us how they survive the severity of Monsoon rains and winds. Power supply is still a dream for many of them. Poor or no ventilation in many houses make these people live in pitch dark even at midday sunshine. Leave alone toilets, many houses don't even have bath rooms that have walls to safeguard the modesty of women.

Each house has a story to tell about the misery of life. Women are most affected. Many of them are either widows or deserted by their husbands with many children to look after. Even those houses where men are available either earn meagre amount per day or don't work at all due to physical ailment and other reasons. Children are most helpless lots, suffering badly from malnutrition and lack of education due to poverty. Single room dilapidated houses, shabbily dressed, mal- nutritious women and children are seen around everywhere. The presence of specially abled children in many houses and inability of these families to provide rehabilitation to these children add to the misery of the families.

Total solution at colony

As part of a total rehabilitation programme, Hidaya foundation has secured around 6 acres of land at KavalKatte, Bantwal tq. and has plan to build 40 houses to start along with a rehabilitation centre for specially abled children and a self- help centre for women.

Coordinated exercise

The Foundation recognises the similar kind of relief effort done by various other organisations in the district. It wishes to have a coordination between various such organisation so that a concerted effort can be made to reach out to poorer section of the community. As a beginning in this regard, Hidaya foundation convened an Ifthar meet of the all the like-minded organizations on 19th of this month at Kairali Hotel in Managalore. Aziz Maulavi, Khatib of Masjidunnoor in his address stressed the need to look into the matter seriously.

The think-tank and representatives of organisations gathered on the occasion appreciated the initiative taken by Hidaya Foundation in this connection and expressed the need for such an endeavor and agreed to work with the Foundation to arrive at a consensus and understanding.

Chennai, Jul 25: Two weeks after a 62-year-old widow accused him of harassment, including urinating outside her house, the Chennai Police on Saturday registered an FIR against ABVP national president Dr Subbiah Shanmugam.

Dr Shanmugam, Professor and HOD, Department of Surgical Oncology, Kilpauk Medical College and Government Royapettah Hospital, has been booked under sections 271 (disobedience to quarantine rule) and 427 (mischief causing damage) under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Tamil Nadu Women Harassment Prevention Act.

The FIR was lodged exactly two weeks after the woman’s relative Balaji Vijayaraghavan filed a complaint with the Adambakkam police accusing Dr Shanmugam of harassing his aunt, who is living alone in her apartment following her husband’s death last year, following an argument over a parking slot.

The action came after Vijayaraghavan alleged that the police were not filing an FIR due to the ABVP functionary’s “political connections.”

Dr Shanmugam and the woman were living in the same apartment complex in Nanganallur and an argument broke between them over a parking slot.

“He wanted to use our parking lot. We agreed but demanded a nominal charge for using it. He was outraged by our demand and even broke our signboard at the parking lot,” Vijayaraghavan wrote in his complaint.

He also alleged that Dr Shanmugam began harassing her by throwing “pieces of chicken” outside her apartment despite knowing she is a vegetarian.

CCTV footage corroborates with the allegations of urinating outside the residence of the widow. However, the ABVP called the incident as a “malicious and derogatory propaganda” by the Congress’ student wing of NSUI.

"The video shared by NSUI with an allegation of harassment is tampered with and is being used with malafide intentions. The two families have discussed this within their housing society and have already concluded that the harassment allegations were caused due to misunderstandings and are untrue,” ABVP National General secretary Nidhi Tripathi said.

Vijayaraghavan also alleged in his two-page written complaint that the ABVP national president had urinated outside the woman’s apartment gate and had been throwing garbage and used masks at her gate.

In his complaint, Vijayaraghavan also said the family was “concerned about her safety” while asking police to take action against Dr Shanmugam, who he says, “has a bad track record in maintaining rapport with neighbours.”

New Delhi, Feb 4: "I own my statement," said BJP lawmaker Anant kumar Hedge on Tuesday amid the raging controversy over his remark on Mahatma Gandhi while adding that he has never said anything against the Father of the Nation.

"All related media reports are false. I never said what is being debated over. It is an unnecessary controversy. I own my statement made on February 1, 2020, in Bengaluru. I never made any reference to any political party or Mahatma Gandhi or anybody else, I was just trying to categorise freedom struggle. That's all," Hedge told news agency.

"I am surprised by the discussion around it. What can I say about something that is not there? There is hullabaloo going on without anything. My statement is available in public forum. If anyone wants to see, it is available online and on my website. Show me if I have said anything against Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and any other freedom fighters," he added.

The BJP leader continued: "That programme was about Savarkar. With due respect of all our freedom fighters, I was just discussing our freedom struggle, there is no confusion or any derogatory comment on freedom struggle or fighters. Unnecessary nuisance has been created."

Hedge stoked a controversy after he had attacked Mahatma Gandhi by calling the freedom struggle led by him a "drama" and also questioned as to how "such people" come to be called 'Mahatma' in India.

"None of these so-called leaders was beaten up by the cops even once. Their independence movement was a big drama. It was staged by these leaders with the approval of the British. It was not a genuine fight. It was an adjustment freedom struggle," he had said.

While several Congress leaders have condemned his remark on the father of the nation, BJP leaders too has distanced themselves from it.

Top leadership in BJP is unhappy with Anantkumar Hegde over his controversial remark on Mahatma Gandhi, party sources had said on Monday, adding that he has been asked to issue an unconditional apology.

Mangaluru, Jun 3: A banner that read "Veer Savarkar Flyover Pumpwell" surfaced on the sidewall of the Pumpwell flyover in Mangaluru on Tuesday night.

It is suspected that activists of Bajrang Dal put up the controversial banner. Though it was removed later, it sparked debates on social media and photos of it went viral.

The development comes amid the controversy over the naming of a flyover at Yelahanka in Bengaluru after Savarkar.

A Hindutva ideologue, Savarkar has tendered apology to British imperialists and pledged to support them following his arrest during India’s freedom movement.
