Boat owners hope for good catch, as fishing activity resumes

Mangalore, August 11: Exuding a lot of confidence on getting big catch, hundreds of mechanised fishing vessels along Arabian Sea in Mangalore have lifted their anchors on Thursday, as the annual fishing ban came to an end.

With this, Mangalore Fishing Port is once again is buzzling with activities.

Among more than 700 mechanised boats, almost half have begun their voyage, according to fishermen leader Vasudev Bolur.

“Although the fishing ban had ended on Wednesday, August 10, the deep sea fishing vessels had received green signal to venture into sea on August 3, as they have to travel several kilo-metres. Hundreds of remaining fishermen ventured into sea on Thursday,” he said.

However, Mr Bolar said that a considerable number of fishermen have decided to lift the anchors only after scheduled Samudra Pooja on August 13.

Earlier in the day, heavy rush was witnessed for ice bars and diesel. Ice bars were reportedly sold in black.

This year, the fishing ban was imposed from June 15. The Karnataka Government, in accordance with the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act 1986, had imposed a 57-day fishing ban along coastal Karnataka keeping in mind the welfare of fishermen and fisheries business in the State and to allow the breeding of the fish during the ban period.

The ban was applicable for fishing activity being taken with the help of mechanised boats, trawlers, and country boats with in-bound or out-bound engines above 10 HP.

Eleven people lost their lives in Kasaragod due to Mangaluru road blockade

Kasaragod, Apr 10: Eleven people died so far in Kerala's northern district Kasargod as they could not access medical facilities in Mangaloru since the border roads were blocked by the Karnataka Government, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

Addressing a press conference at the Government Secretariat here, the Chief Minister said, "It is really unfortunate that people from Kasargod district in Kerala are still being denied treatment in hospitals at Mangalore in Karnataka State."

"We will improve the medical facilities in Kasargod and if necessary, patients will be airlifted to the neighbouring districts in Kerala to provide emergency medical assistance," he added.

Karnataka govt to build guest house for Kannadiga pilgrims in Ayodhya

Bengaluru, Aug 8: Anticipating a huge number of pilgrims from Karnataka to start visiting Ayodhya following the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Ram temple, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Friday requested his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath for two acres of land to build a 'yatri nivas' (guest house).

"A large number of pilgrims from Karnataka would be visiting Ayodhya. The government of Karnataka wishes to construct a yatri nivas for the pilgrims visiting Ayodhya," Yediyurappa wrote to Yogi.

"I request you to grant two acres of land in Ayodhya for this purpose," he said.

The Chief Minister said the yatri nivas will be constructed for the benefit of pilgrims from the southern state.

He also congratulated the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for successfully laying the foundation stone for the Ram temple on Wednesday.

Learn to live with coronavirus; no other option left now: Karnataka CM

Bengaluru, Jul 6: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday said that the "country will have to learn to live with coronavirus as there are no options".

Yediyurappa made the remark after paying tribute to Babu Jagjivan Ram, on his death anniversary, at a ceremony in Vidhana Soudha.

"We don't have any other option, we have to learn to live with this virus. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the same thing. We have increased ambulances, we have made all arrangements to fight the pandemic. It is very important to safeguard ourselves," he said.

The Chief Minister added that the state government has made many arrangements to combat the widespread illness.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there is 23,474 number of COVID-19 cases in the state and 372 people have died due to the illness.
