Nine thousand people attend endo medical camp

Kasargod, August 14: The first medial camp for the patients in the endosulfan sprayed areas was conducted here on Saturday. As many as nine thousand patients attended the camp. But each patient was examined and disposed of within minutes.

The number of patients who attended the gynecological camp was far below other categories. The patients were mainly drawn from four grama panchayants including the Enmakaje grama panchayts.

Though the medical camp was described as advanced medial camps by the district administration, the specialised doctors were mostly the first year PG students from various medical colleges in the state. They were led by assistant professors in each discipline such as neurology, orthopedics, ENT, dermatology, pediatric, medicine, ophthalmology, PMR, gynecology and surgery.

It was described that gynecological problems were acute in the endosulfan sprayed areas, but the number of women who turned up in the gynecological camp was below 80. Most of the women attended the camp for the treatment of ordinary gynecological problems which women in any areas may suffer.

However, there was heavy rush in the medicine category camp. There were several patients with mouth cancer queuing up for the camp. Oral cancer was the direct result of tobacco chewing and 'it was all described as endosulfan affected diseases'.

Locals disrupt propaganda campaign on CAA, block BJP leaders

Hosapete, Jan 6: Tension prevailed at Chalavadikeri here on Monday as residents prevented BJP leaders and workers from entering the locality for propaganda on Citizenship (Amendment) Act and shouted slogans against them.

On receipt of the information about the arrival of the BJP leaders, the residents of the locality gathered at the entrance of the lane and displayed black flag besides shouting slogan-go back, go back.

The people told the BJP workers not enter their vicinity when the workers stated them that they will distribute pamphlets only.

The police who arrived at the spot are trying their best to pacify the irate locals. More number of people belonging to Muslim and Dalit communities are residing in the area.

Ramadan begins in Mangaluru, Udupi; no taraveeh in mosques

Mangaluru, Apr 23: Muslims in coastal Karnataka will fast tomorrow (April 24) along with Middle Eastern Muslims as the Khazis in the region have confirmed the beginning of the blessed month of Ramadan tonight.

Religious authorities in Saudi Arabia and a few Middle Eastern countries have already declared that Friday will be the start of the month of fasting.

In Kerala and twin districts of coastal Karnataka - Dakshina Kannada and Udupi- the announcement was made following maghrib praers as the cresent moon was sighted in a few places in Kerala.

The Thakbeer was pronounced from the minarets of the mosques across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi after Maghrib Namaz as the religious heads confirmed the moon sighting.

However, the religious heads including Mangaluru Khazi Twaqa Ahmed Musliar and Udupi Khazi Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal, have urged the Muslims to offer all the prayers including Taraveeh at homes along with family members due to the lockdown imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

There will be no congregational taraveeh prayers in mosques and Muslims should follow the covid-19 guidelines of the government, they stated.

Ramadan begins around 11 days earlier each year. Its start is calculated based on the sighting of the new moon, which marks the beginning of the Muslim lunar month that varies between 29 or 30 days.

During the month, Muslims are expected to abstain during daylight hours from food, drink, smoking and sex to focus on spirituality.

210 new COVID-19 cases in Karnataka, tally at 7,944

Bengaluru, Jun 18: As many as 210 new COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths have been reported in Karnataka, taking the total cases to 7,944 and death toll to 114, said State Health Department.

Today, 179 persons have been discharged across the State while 4,983 persons have been discharged so far.

The number of total active cases in Karnataka stands at 2,843.

The COVID-19 count in India has reached 3,66,946 on Thursday, according to the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry (MoHFW).

The death toll due to COVID-19 has now reached 12,237. The COVID-19 count includes 1,60,384 active cases, while 1,94,325 patients have been cured and discharged or migrated so far.
