M'lore DCP Dharmaiah chosen for President's Police Medal

Mangalore, August 15: Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) of Mangalore City Police Commissionerate Doddaiah Dharmaiah, has been selected to receive the 'President's Police Medal' conferred on police officials for distinguished service.

He is one of 22 police officers from Karnataka to receive this honour for distinguished police service during 65^th Independence Day. Four police officers from the state have been selected for 'Police Medal for Meritorious Service'.

He was the DCP (VVIP security) in Bangalore City Police before becoming the DCP in Mangalore in the month of July. He has also served as the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) of Mangalore sub-division in erstwhile Dakshina Kannada District Police.

City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh and all other police officers of the Commissionerate congratulated Dharmaiah on his achievement.

Mr Singh noted this is the first official honour that an officer posted in the newly established Mangalore City Police Commissionerate has received.

In all, 930 personnel have been awarded police medals on the occasion of the Independence Day this year.

President's Police Medals for Gallantry have been awarded to 7 personnel, Police Medals for Gallantry to 95 personnel, President's Police Medals for Distinguished service to 93 personnel and Police Medals for Meritorious Service have been awarded to 735 personnel.

In addition, 16 personnel have been awarded correctional Service Medals, President's Correctional Service Medal for Gallantry to 1 personnel, Correctional Service Medal for Gallantry to 1 personnel, President's Correctional Service Medals for Distinguished Service to 2 personnel and Correctional Service Medals for Meritorious Service have been awarded to 12 personnel.

Dropping Tipu Sultan from Class 7 textbook is a communally motivated move: SDPI

Mangaluru, July 30: The Social Democratic Party of India has condemned the move by the state government to drop a lesson on legendary Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 textbook.

The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapter from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed.

In a media release statement, SDPI State President Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe termed the move as communally motivated. “By dropping the lesson, the BJP-led government is engaged in saffronisation of education,” he alleged.

He said that Tipu was the most prominent freedom fighter, who had given priority to irrigation, rocket technology and harmony. The BJP government is also planning to scrap lessons on the Constitution, secularism and democracy. By twisting history, the BJP is trying to mislead the younger generation, he added.

Sedition charges against Dr Zafarul Islam Khan for warning bigots sparks row

Newsroom, May 2: The Delhi Police’s move to book Delhi Minorities Commission chairman Zafarul Islam Khan under sedition charges over his social media statement condemning Hindutva bigots has raised many eyebrows.

A pubic statement has been issued in solidarity with Zafarul Islam Khan by a group of NGOs and citizens which condemned the media trial targeting Khan.

The statement demanded legal action against those who are distorting Khan's Facebook post and spreading false propaganda against him.

Delhi Police Special Cell registered the FIR against Khan on the complaint of a Vasant Kunj resident. The complaint came to the Lodhi Colony office of the special cell, after the assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Safdarjung Enclave forwarded it.

The investigation has been handed over to special cell inspector Praveen Kumar.

According to the FIR, Khan has been booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code -- 124 A (sedition) and 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc,).

Khan on April 28 had posted controversial comments on his Facebook page. "Mind you, bigots, Indian Muslims have opted until now not to complain to the Arab and Muslim world about your hate campaigns and lynchings and riots. The day they are pushed to do that, bigots will face an avalanche," Khan had written on Facebook.

However, the Delhi Minorities Commission's chief on Friday had apologised for his controversial remark and had said that he never tried to tarnish the image of India. He also removed the controversial post from the social media and issued a prolonged clarification.

Man hacks four family members to death in Manjeshwar

Manjeshwar, Aug 3: In a horrific incident, a man hacked four of his relatives to death at Bayar near Kaniala Gurukumeri in Manjeshwar taluk of Kasaragod district.

According to police, Udaya (40), a resident of Sudanbala, killed three of his maternal uncles and a maternal aunt who were staying together at a house at around 7:30 p.m. today.

The deceased have been identified as Sadashiv (54), Vittal (52), Babu (50), and maternal Revati (58).

Locals caught him and handed him over to the police after tying his hands and legs.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a familial clash led to the gruesome murder. A police team led by Kasargod DSP Balakrishnan are investigating the matter.
