Pedalling awareness from Gurgaon to Kanyakumari

Mangalore, August 17: A mediocre idea that generates enthusiasm will go further than a great idea that inspires no one, so goes a quote. This goes true with the energy of Daljeet Singh, a resident of Gurgaon, Haryana who is cycling across the nation to spread awareness about man's responsibility towards his planet and environment. He is trying to inform people about the problem of global warming all across the nation.

Mr Singh, who started his journey in Gurgaon, Haryana on 10th June of this year with a clear aim and not enough money to finance his expedition, arrived in Mangalore last week. After spending two days in this coastal city, he continued his journey southwards towards Kanyakumari.

What drives him to indulge in such a physically excruciating expedition across the nation? He feels that it will result in a change at least in himself. “There is great satisfaction in doing things for a cause”, he says.

Speaking about how unique our planet is, as it is believed to be the only planet to sustain and support life, he feels we have great responsibility towards the planet. “We are the caretakers of our planet. But we are slowly destroying it day by day”, he observes. He feels that minimising the use of motor vehicles and plastics will result in a greener and cleaner environment.

He had gone through a lot of roadblocks during the course of the journey. “Accommodation was a big problem”, he says. “I had started with Rs 20,000 which was not enough to feed. I had to buy a new bicycle for Rs 3,500 as my bicycle broke down in Bhopal”, he recalls. He sleeps in temples as affording hotels to stay is “costly” for him.

Recalling the various kind of cuisine all across the state he says it was hard to adjust to South Indian food.

Challenges were numerous, especially in the ghats he says. Pedalling in the ghats is tiresome for him and says that he pushes his bicycles if there is a steep climb. He feels that he had got great opportunities to enjoy nature as he is not in any rush.

He will visit several cities of South India before culminating his expedition in Kanyakumari. “I'll take a train back”, he says.

Mangaluru, Jul 29: Ahead of popular Hindu festival Raksha Bandhan, Karnataka postal circle has introduced an online portal 'Rakhi Post' to deliver rakhis across the country amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

This year Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Monday, August 3.

This service can be used to send rakhis to people across the country without violating the coronavirus norms.

Speaking to news agency, Senior Superintendent of Post offices, Shriharsha N said, "I am happy to announce that Karnataka postal circle has introduced an online portal 'rakhi post' to deliver rakhis to people during coronavirus phase."

"People willing to avail this service can visit this portal and pay a nominal amount of Rs 100 to send a rakhi," Shriharsha said.

The official has suggested to avail the service before July 31 for the timely delivery of rakhis.

The portal is also offering a special service to send rakhis to the soldier deployed on the borders. "We have also introduced a unique feature to deliver rakhis to Indian soldiers on the borders," he added.

Bengaluru, Jan 19: Two college students have been arrested for allegedly spiking their female friend's drink and sexually assaulting her in Bengaluru.

The 19-year-old victim filed a complaint against the two accused, following which they were nabbed. In her complaint, the victim said that the two friends persuaded her to accompany them in a party where one of them allegedly spiked her drink.

Feeling unwell, she wanted to return to her PG, but the two managed to convince her to stay back at their place, where they allegedly sexually assaulted her.

"After some time one of my friends gave me something to drink and I vomited. I felt uneasy and decided to return to my PG. However, he forced me to go to his house stating that I was not in a condition to go to my PG. He convinced me saying that I can go home in the morning. I did not suspect any foul-play as he was a friend," the victim was quoted as saying by the publication.

Ballari, June 30: A video clip of dead bodies of covid-19 victims being disgracefully thrown into a pit said to be in Karnataka’s Ballari has gone viral on social media triggering outrage from netizens.

Ballari Deputy Commissioner SS Nakul ordered a probe. He told media persons that the veracity of the video is still under question and that it still needs to be established if the video was taken in Ballari.

In the video, a pit is seen which appears to be disinfected. The video features masked men covered in body suits bringing dead bodies from a black hearse van in black body bags one by one and throwing the dead bodies into the same pit. In all, three dead bodies are thrown into the same pit in the video.

"We have assigned an Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) to enquire and verify the same. We are awaiting reports. We don't know yet if it (the video) is from Ballari or not," Nakul said.

The district which has so far reported around 800 cases in the last three months has also witnessed around two dozen deaths.

Twitterati on Tuesday raised questions about the handling of the bodies. "Even dead have some respect and they deserved a decent burial," said a social activist from Ballari. Similar reactions echoed on social media and some also pointed out on how the family members who have to stay away from burials feel about it.

Covid burial protocol

According to the protocol set by the Union Health Ministry for the burial of Covid-19 patients, the patients' orifices (nose, mouth and ears) have to be sealed and the body has to be wrapped in three layers of personal protective equipment (PPE). Thereafter it should be placed in a body bag. Family members should not be allowed to accompany the body in the hearse van. Covid-19 victims have to be given a deep burial. The grave should be minimum 10-feet deep.

The grave should be disinfected with bleaching powder and the area should be cordoned off so that the general public is not in the vicinity.  The vehicle used to transport the dead body of a Covid-19 victim -- ambulance or a hearse van -- has to be disinfected for 16 hours before being used again. Most Covid-19 victims in the state have had burials in the absence of family members as they are generally in quarantine for being the primary contacts of the patient.
