Mangalore witnesses student power as thousands take to streets for Anna

Mangalore, August 17: In a rare show of 'unity' and 'youth power' thousands of students from various colleges in Mangalore and suburbs on Wednesday boycotted the classes and poured into the demonstration centre of the city filling the vast space between the Office of Deputy Commissioner, Office of City Police Commissioner and City Bus Terminus, and raising slogans in support of anti-corruption campaigner Anna Hazare.

Students boycotted classes in response to calls given by various students organisations including All College Students' Association of Mangalore University (ACSAMU), Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Students Federation of India (SFI).

“We are here to demand a corruption-free system, as we are frustrated of scandals,” said one among the 10,000 protesters, who were visibly disturbed by the attitude of Union Government.

The unprecedented turnout was a clear message from the student community that they are not ready to tolerate corruption anymore.

Two stages were set up by the agitating students in the morning; while ACSAMU leaders addressed the gathering in front of DC office, ABVP leaders delivered lectures in front of the Commissioner's office.

The traffic flow on the main roads of the city began to be affected from 10:00 am in the morning as ASCAMU and ABVP members took out a march from Jyoti Circle expressing their anger against Union Government and Delhi Police for Hazare's arrest.

Two separate memorandums addressed to the President of India were handed over to the Deputy Commissioner at his office separately by the two organisations.

The memorandum demanded a strong anti-corruption bill as proposed by Team Anna and restoration of democratic right to protest, which had been denied to Hazare and several of his associates.

A senior police officer of the Commissionerate said the spontaneous marches have been largely peaceful but led to the traffic disruption in the city.

The students of Mangalore University located at Mangalagangothri on the outskirts of the city too joined the nationwide demonstration in support of Anna Hazare's anti-corruption campaign by boycotting classes.

Over a 1,000 students gathered outside the University campus in the morning chanting pro-Hazare slogans.

“We had an experience of 'University bandh' as no students were ready to attend the classes,” said Safia Naeem, a lecturer at Department of Mass Communication and Journalism.

The pro-Hazare protests are expected to continue in the city as different organisations have planned separate demonstrations.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: A woman suffered critical injuries after a speeding car knocked down her scooter and then ran over her at Kadri Kambla Junction in the city today.

The woman identified as Vanishri Bhat (22) a resident of Kedila from Puttur. 

A CCTV footage of the accident, which went viral on social media, shows the car hitting the scooter, pushing the woman on road for a couple of meters before climbing over her.

The car stopped when she was under it. A few people including a policeman lifted the car from the front and rescued the woman. 

She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader’s car which was passing through that way. 

She has suffered critical injuries on her head, ribs, hands and legs, sources said. She is reportedly responding to treatment. 

It may be recalled that in December last year a lorry-auto accident at the same spot claimed life of a 56-year-old teacher while the auto driver miraculously survived. Following the accident, speed breakers were installed at the junction.

Bengaluru, Apr 24: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday held a meeting with state officials to address the situation in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to COVID-19, the prices of the crops have come down. It was instructed to buy those vegetables and keep them in cold storage and then sell. It was also instructed to export fruits, vegetables which cannot be kept for a long time to other states and countries.

Wherever there is a scarcity of drinking water, it was decided to supply water immediately.
Chief Minister Yediyurappa had earlier spoken to Union Minister Sadananda Gowda and took information regarding fertilisers.

As fertilisers' demand is less in the international market, the Union minister for fertilisers said that farmers will be given fertilisers at less than the actual price.

As some of the associations/guilds have violated the lease conditions by not starting the actual work which they have got the land for in Bengaluru, they have been instructed to return the land to the government where the lease conditions have been violated.

As far as the irrigation department is concerned, much water is stored in dams. It was decided to utilise the same for the cultivation of crops and for the purpose of drinking.

As far as the education department is concerned, it was instructed to give online training to students.

With the help of state television channel Doordarshan, it has been decided to teach students about the syllabus and other activities till the reopening of school.

The KSRTC has lost hundreds of crore due to the reduction in bus services due to COVID-19. So, they were instructed to use buses to transport goods to generate revenue.

The government also decided that salary for the doctors, who are working on a contract basis against COVID-19, will be increased significantly.

Bengaluru, April 6: The total number of positive cases in Karnataka climbed to 163 after 12 more cases were reported, state government officials said on Monday.

Out of the 12 new cases, three of them have a history of travelling to Delhi.

The tally includes four deaths and 18 people have recovered and discharged.

The total number of COVID-19 positive cases in India crossed the 4,000 mark, mounting to 4,067, said Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.
