Moegling's contributions to Kannada literature hailed

Mangalore, August 18: Missionaries, especially the Basel Mission of Germany was responsible for rejuvenating and spreading Kannada literature to Europe, said B A Vivek Rai, Retired Vice-Chancellor, Hampi and Karnataka State Open University, after inaugurating a two day international conference to commemorate the bi-centenary of Rev Dr Hermann Moegling here on Thursday.

The conference is being organised by Karnataka Theological Research Centre, Mangalore along with Karnataka Sahitya Academy, Bangalore and Kittel Foundation, Mangalore at Bishop Jattanna Auditorium in the premises of Karnataka Theological College, Mangalore.

Mr Rai was appreciative of the works of Moegling, a German missionary, such as the publication of first Kannada newspaper 'Mangalooru Samachara' and a compilation of Kannada classics 'Bibliotheca Carnataca'. “We should understand the troubles he has endured 150 years ago to study and popularise several types of Kannada literature”, he noted.

Mr Rai, who is also a visiting professor of Indology to Wolfsberg University in Germany, revealed that there is a team of experts working to translate the works in German to Kannada and vice versa.

Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University, in his presidential address lauded the efforts of the missionaries in education, language and literature. He observed that it was due to the efforts of missionaries, the quality of education in the district was better.

Recalling a book on botany about 500 medicinal plants in Western Ghats published by the Basel mission in 1870, he felt that there was a great influence of the missionaries in popularising science across the region.

“We should be grateful to people like Moegling who have contributed to make our societies better”, he said.

Dr Hannibal Cabral, Principal, Karnataka Theological College, Dr Rathnakar Sadananda, Director, Karnataka Theological Research Centre, H M Maheshwarayya, Secretary, Kittel Foundation were among the dignitaries present during the occasion.

Bengaluru, Apr 13: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President and former Minister D K Shivakumar has demanded resignation of Minister In-Charge of COVID-19 for his alleged irresponsible comment, despite holding a responsible post.

Mr Shivakumar's comments came after Dr Sudhakar on Sunday shared a picture of him and his children in a swimming pool, on Twitter with a caption, ''After a long time joined my children for swimming hope maintaining social distance here as well…hahaha.''

However, Dr Sudhakar deleted the tweet from his account, soon after he was criticised for sharing such a picture, when the country is facing a health crisis.

Bengaluru, May 24: In an effort to protect passengers and staff from the risk of COVID-19 transmission, the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has introduced a parking-to-boarding contactless journey at the airport.

With a greater emphasis on minimum touch and minimum exposure between passengers and airport personnel, BIAL aims to minimise all physical contact at the airport. The technology will continue to enable a seamless airport journey, with greater emphasis on health and safety.

"As the gateway to a new India, BLR Airport has a key role to play in helping passengers through this global health crisis by reassuring them that their safety is our top priority. We have introduced innovative contactless procedures to minimise exposure at the airport," said Hari Marar, MD and CEO, BIAL.

"These enhancements demonstrate our continued commitment to keep our passengers safe in this environment. We believe our new measures will boost confidence among passengers," continued Marar.

"BLR Airport is all geared up to welcome our passengers back and - working with various government departments - we're committed to offering them a safe experience by implementing the best-in-class standards, procedures and practices," Marar added.

Earlier, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that domestic flight operations will resume from May 25 noting that all airlines and airports were ready but it is not viable to keep the middle seat vacant as it will lead to hike in the ticket price and prescribed social distancing norms would still not be met.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, on completion of one year of his government, today said coronavirus hampered his development plans for the state.

He said the state will not see a lockdown again "at any cost".

"Due to coronavirus we couldn't meet people's expectations but now we'll not have lockdown in Karnataka at any cost. In future we're going to fulfill whatever I announced in Budget. If necessary we'll take loans and complete all development work," said Yediyurappa.

"Covid has hampered development plans of Karnataka, lot more needs to be done, i'm committed to providing an able, stable government," he said.

Arrangements were made for virtual celebrations to mark the one-year anniversary of Yediyurappa government at Banquet Hall in Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. Social distancing was maintained at the event.

A record 5,199 new COVID-19 cases and 82 deaths were reported from Karnataka on Sunday, the state's health department said.

With this, the total number of coronavirus cases in the state stands at 96,141, including 58,417 active cases and 35,838 recoveries.

So far, 1,878 deaths have been reported from Karnataka. Karnataka is the only state to have over 50,000 active cases with overall tally below 1 lakh.
