Students revolt against St Aloysius College for suspending protesters

Mangalore, August 19: Confusion prevailed at St Aloysius College, here as a large number of students on Friday morning staged a demonstration after the College management allegedly suspended 10 PUC students for boycotting classes to take part in demonstration in support of Anna Hazare's movement against corruption.

Anxious students led by ABVP gathered at the main entrance to the College threatening to intensify the protest if the College management took any action against any student for participating in anti-corruption demonstration.

According to the sources, the students had planned to demonstrate in support of the anti-corruption movement on Thursday, but were supposedly denied permission by the college authorities. Moreover, the protesters accused the Principal of suspending 10 students for staging demonstration in support of Anna on Thursday.

Students who participated in Friday morning's protest claimed to be agitating both in support of Mr Hazare and against the actions of the College.

However, the agitating students agreed to return to their classes after they were promised that no action will be initiated against them, said Mahesh, an ABVP leader.

The college staff denied having any knowledge about the suspension of 10 students. They said that the students were given permission to agitate on Wednesday but permission was denied for agitation the following day, which has led to this protest.

The Principal of the College declined to comment on the issue.

Bengaluru, Jul 26: A total of 5,199 new COVID-19 cases and 82 deaths were reported from Karnataka on Sunday, the state's health department said.

With this, the total number of coronavirus cases in the state stands at 96,141, including 58,417 active cases and 35,838 recoveries.
So far, 1,878 deaths have been reported from Karnataka.

Meanwhile, India reported a spike of 48,661 cases and 705 deaths in the last 24 hours, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.

A total of 9,46,777 tests have been done so far and the number of tests per million in the national capital stands at 49,830.

The total COVID-19 positive cases stand at 13,85,522, including 4,67,882 active cases, 8,85,577 cured/discharged/migrated, and 32,063 deaths, it added.

New Delhi, May 1: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday issued an order under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 to further extend the lockdown for a further period of two weeks beyond May 4.

The current lockdown period is scheduled to end on May 3.

"After a comprehensive review and in view of the lockdown measures having led to significant gains, the COVID-19 situation in the country, Ministry of Home Affairs issued an order under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, today, to further extend the lockdown for a further period of two weeks beyond May 4, 2020," read the order of the Home Ministry.

In red zones and outside containment zones, certain activities including plying of cycle rickshaws and auto-rickshaws, taxis and cab aggregators, intra-district and inter-district plying of buses and barber shops, spas and salons will be prohibited in addition to those prohibited throughout India.

A limited number of activities will remain prohibited across the country, irrespective of the zone, including travel by air, rail, metro and inter-state movement by road, running of schools, colleges, and other educational and training/coaching institutions, the order said.

This came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with chief ministers of several states last month where some of them suggested extension of lockdown.

Bengaluru, Mar 10: With concerns growing by the day, the Karnataka government is readying three more labs to test throat swab samples.

Currently, only two labs in Bengaluru — National Institute of Virology and Virus Research and Diagnostics Laboratory (VRDL) lab attached to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute — are categorised biosafety level 2+, a requirement for coronavirus tests.

Now, the government is working on upgrading three more labs, one each in the government medical colleges at Hassan, Mysuru and Shivamogga. “The labs will be ready within one week,” the authorities said.

Currently, the labs are testing only throat swab samples of suspected patients and taking 24 hours to give the results. “A patient’s blood sample will be collected only if he or she tests positive for covid-19 infection in the first throat swab sample.

While earlier the state would send all samples of suspected coronavirus cases to NIV, Pune, the two labs were upgraded to biosafety level 2+ in mid-February.
